If you’ve shopped at Aldi for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed the grocer does not hesitate to make adjustments to its inventory from time to time. Aldi is constantly introducing new products, while also giving the boot to other products for various reasons.
Sometimes products disappear for reasons that aren’t clear. That is the case with the Benton’s Fudge Mint Cookies, which were a dead ringer for Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies. As of late 2019 to early 2020, Aldi no longer sells the Fudge Mint Cookies.
Aldi’s copycat Girl Scout Thin Mints, now extinct.
We were first clued in that something was up in late 2019, when a reader asked us what happened to the Benton’s Fudge Mint Cookies. They were still on our local store shelves at the time, so we didn’t worry yet but simply kept an eye on the cookies. Sometimes stores will sell out of a certain product and there is a delay in restocking for unknown reasons, causing a temporary and localized shortage.
But then in January of 2020, we noticed the Fudge Mint Cookies were missing from our local stores. I reached out to Aldi via their contact page and asked what had happened to the cookies. I received this response:
The item in which you are inquiring has been discontinued and is no longer available. However, your feedback is very important to us and has been forwarded to the ALDI Buying Team for review.
Aldi did not say why it pulled the Fudge Mint Cookies from store shelves, so I reached out to them again and specifically asked if they could tell me why the cookies were pulled. They responded promptly with the same message, simply stating they had been discontinued and offering no reason.
So we don’t know why the cookies are gone. We’re not sure if the reason was poor sales (although we can hardly imagine Thin Mint knockoffs not selling well, considering how Thin Mints are the number one, most popular Girl Scout cookie), or possibly the reason was quality issues, an issue with the supplier, or something else all together.
What we do know is that the case of the disappearing cookies has resulted in some disappointed Aldi shoppers.
Not all of Aldi’s knockoff Girl Scout cookies are gone, though. Benton’s Peanut Butter Cookies, which are comparable to Girl Scout Tagalongs or Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties, are still available at Aldi. Benton’s Caramel Coconut Cookies, which are just like Girl Scout Samoa Cookies, also remain available.
If you’re still craving Thin Mints, you can get them from your local Girl Scouts, or you can purchase other knockoff versions such as Keebler Grasshopper cookies at most major grocery stores. Retailers such as Walmart, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree even carry their own reasonably priced imitations of Thin Mints.
Thank you very much for asking not just once, but twice *why*. As we’ve learned at Aldi, if you see something you like, stock up as much as is reasonable before they take it away!

It seems very odd to me that they would pull them at all. They seemed to have sold better than the other GS cookie knockoffs, but never so popular that there were runs on them, at least at my store. I hope they do bring them back.
My husband will be so disappointed. These are his favorites.
Those mint cookies is the best I don’t understand why it got pulled I hope the company reconsiders this because I can say that is one thing that went in the store I go to I know its silly but those mint cookies are the best

They also appear to have discontinued The PurAqua Black Cherry Sparkling Water (33.6oz.). But they keep the peach flavor, which tastes like battery acid. Go figure.
Funny i tried to get the peach but they only had the cherry.
Yes, as it turns out, the black cherry wasn’t discontinued, merely out of stock at my Aldi. Last week my daughter was able to get both the cherry and peach. Still no thin mint cookies, though. 🙁

That’s s a big disappointment! I also noticed the anise pizelles are no longer at Aldi, just the new chocolate and vanilla! i loved the anise flavor!
Always bought ! Very sad and disappointing they no longer carry a good selling item.
Aldi also no longer stock Icon mints. They were tastier than Tic Tacs, had less sugar and no nasty additives. Everytime I find a good product, the shops seem to stop keeping these items in stock after two or three years. I have tried other places to find these but can not. Are they still made?

Is it possible ALDI was trying to be considerate of the Girl Scouts and they’re just gone for the first part of the year?
That would make sense if all of the copycat cookies had been removed. In this case, only the Thin Mint copycats are gone. The others — the Tagalong copycat and the Samoa copycat — are still in stores.
Bought some Girl Scouts Tagalongs. Oh my gosh, this year the Aldis brand tastes BETTER THAN the Girl Scout $5 version. Go figure! Way to go Aldis! Come in GS bakers!

They’re much better than the Girl Scouts & Keebler brands.
They’re also 1 of the most routine items I purchase at Aldi.

My gf and I have been shopping at Aldi for years. To be perfectly honest, when the Grocery Outlet open just up the road from Aldi, I took a trip to see what they had. Hard to believe, but there prices on a lot of things were less than Aldi, to the point where it didn´t really pay to shop there anymore. The only reason I went to them in the first place was to get my two packages/week of Mint cookies. Admit it Aldi. You screwed up royally on this one. Maybe losing customers will wake you up.
Aldi appears to be listening and looks like the brought back a Fudge Stripe mint version of this cookie that is amazing!

That is really too bad! Closest thing I have seen since they stop carrying fudge mint!

I’d have to imagine since the thin mints are the #1 seller for girl scouts by a WIDE, I mean VERY WIDE margin, they don’t care as much about the other knockoffs leeching sales off them, but they probably said get the thin mints off the shelf and we won’t bother you about the rest. Non-Disclosure Agreement would explain the silence on WHY…
Except that plenty of other retailers sell Thin Mint knockoffs, too, so I doubt the Girl Scouts would make Aldi pull them but not address the issue at other stores.
SOME LUCK!!!! Those EXACT Fudge Mint Cookies have reappeared in the ‘other’ German grocer, Lidl. If you are fortunate to have BOTH choices (like in the Northeast) of Lidl and Aldi – you will instantly notice many similarities and identicals (i.e. Ranch dressing). But never mind those, the best ‘biscuit’ cookies from The Netherlands are now available at Lidl. Try the “CAFE NOIR” coffee-frosted biscuit in the black box. Oh, you’ll find it. At Lidl, that is.
I know it may sound pathetic, but those cookies were the only reason why I’d stop in at Aldis at all. I don’t have a good reason to go there now. So sad…
Dollar General now carries a thin mint cookie under their brand name Clover Leaf. I bought some today and they are pretty good.
