Every December, my kids incessantly ask how many days are left until Christmas, and every year a simple Advent calendar can help to make the countdown a little easier. Our family has purchased Aldi’s Choceur Advent Calendar with 24 milk chocolate figures for several years now. It’s cheap, it’s fun, and it’s tasty.
We always buy the cheaper chocolate-filled Advent calendar (sold for 99 cents at our local store), but Aldi also sells a premium chocolate Advent calendar (sold for between $4 and $5 at our local store). This review deals with the less expensive basic Choceur Advent calendar.
The calendar is a large, very thin box with a nonreligious holiday picture on the front. The back features nutrition information and a picture that can be colored. The front features small doors with numbers that are not in any particular order — one door for each day from December 1 through December 24 — that punch or pop open, revealing one small decorative chocolate in a plastic tray for each day. The chocolates are shaped like horns, candles, stars, and other traditional Christmas shapes. The idea is that when all the doors have been opened and the chocolates are gone, it will be Christmas Eve.
The chocolates are made with Utz certified cocoa that advertises “sustainable, socially responsible and environmentally friendly cocoa farming.” Consumers can learn more at www.utzcertified.org. One piece of chocolate is considered one serving and comes in at 15 calories, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, and 2 grams of sugar.
The calendar does a good job of giving my young kids an idea of how many days are left until Christmas, since they have little understanding of the concept of time. I simply tell them to look at how many doors are left to open. I have two children, so we had to make the ever-important decision about how to share the chocolates. We opted to gently break the chocolate piece in half every day so each child gets (roughly) the same amount.
The Verdict:
Aldi’s Choceur Advent calendar with 24 milk chocolate figures is a fun and inexpensive way to count down the days until Christmas. It features nonreligious holiday images, and small doors on the box open to reveal a modest-sized chocolate piece each day from December 1 through December 24. Recommended.
