Kirkwood Whole Grain Chicken Breast Fries

Aldi doesn’t lack for chicken. Chicken wings, chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, and even whole boxes of chicken (regular or Southern style). Kirkwood is the most common Aldi brand for anything chicken related, whether it be Regular Buys or Special Buys. Such is the case with this:

Kirkwood chicken fries

Kirkwood Whole Grain Chicken Breast Fries are exactly what their long name says they are. They’re chicken fries, made with chicken breast meat and covered in whole grain batter. They are a Special Buy and are found in the frozen section.

The box offers a multitude of ways to cook them. They can be heated in a conventional oven at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes. They can be cooked in the microwave for 1 minute for 4 pieces or 1 minute 40 seconds for 8 pieces, turning them halfway through. They can be fried in a deep fryer at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Or they can be heated in a toaster oven at 425 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes.

Conventional wisdom says that microwave preparation is probably the worst — and we don’t have a deep fryer — so we went the conventional oven approach. We cooked them for the full 12 minutes, hopeful that they would come out crispy.

We were not disappointed. These Aldi chicken fries are really good. They’ve got a crispy batter that has just the right amount of seasoning, and the chicken inside has good texture, moisture, and flavor. They taste good by themselves, but they’re particularly good with barbecue sauce, honey mustard, ranch, or plain old ketchup.

The draw of these is the “whole grain” element, something we have already explored the health benefits of in other products. That is a benefit here, but, as you would also expect, these are not exactly vegetable sticks; they’re pretty high in fat and sodium, and their nutritional value (outside of protein and iron) is pretty negligible.

The Verdict:

They’re not an everyday product, but when they hit the Special Buy shelves, the Kirkwood Whole Grain Chicken Breast Fries are worth a look if you’re one who likes bite-sized chicken. They cook easily and taste great. Just don’t expect the most nutritious experience, despite what the whole grain batter might indicate. Recommended.

  1. Thanks so much for the review. I have a question about the chicken fries. I don’t like “chicken goo” products (sorry about the term but I don’t know what to call it) where the chicken is not whole meat pieces. Something weird about the texture kinda puts me off. So is it whole meat pieces inside, or shaped chicken slurry? I might still get a box for my husband, who likes chicken nuggety things.
