How to Turn Aldi’s Easy Home Laundry Cart Into a House Plant Stand

Last Updated on April 21, 2021

Last year, I bought the Easy Home 3-Tier Wire Cart from Aldi for $9.99. It was a limited-time item only in stores for a short while, and it was advertised as a laundry cart, good for holding supplies. It assembled easily and worked as advertised, unlike another cart Aldi sold around the winter holidays last year.

I initially used the Easy Home wire cart as advertised. I placed my laundry detergent, stain remover, and fabric softener on it in my laundry room.

Eventually, though, I realized it wasn’t working for me. I could never find a good location in my laundry room to keep the cart. It was either in the way, or it was too far away from my washer and dryer.

A small cart can serve multiple purposes, and I tried to think of other ways to use it. It wouldn’t fit in any of our bedroom closets for shoe or toy storage. It also seemed out of place in our kids’ playroom as toy or game storage. I could not find any uses for it in our bathrooms or kitchen. So I took everything off of it and let it sit empty for a while in a corner of my basement.

Time passed, and thanks probably to Pinterest, I thought of another way to use my little laundry cart: as a plant stand.

I brought the cart out of storage and set a few house plants on it. It looked good, and my plants were pretty stable sitting on the wire shelves. I added a few more potted plants and placed the cart in front of my living room window. The cart looked like it had belonged there all along, filled with happy little house plants, and its narrow profile means it doesn’t take up too much space in my small living room. It also helped to open up space in my kitchen window where most of my house plants had previously been crowded in.

House plants — and especially succulents — seem to be trending in home decor right now. I tend to buy several house plants each year from Aldi because they’re cheap and pretty. Even if they don’t always survive (but most of them do, thankfully), they are at least inexpensive and provide some beauty for a while, and they have air-cleaning properties. I’ve also noticed this past spring that Aldi has sold quite a few actual dedicated plant stands made of metal or wood that are good for indoor or outdoor use, along with a variety of pots, so potted plants are definitely a thing. So far, though, I haven’t seen anything with both the narrow profile and the high plant-holding capacity of my humble laundry cart.

Another nice thing about my Aldi laundry cart / house plant stand is that it has wheels and is easily portable. It usually stays in the living room, where visitors often comment on it, but I can also wheel it into my sun room or in front of any bedroom window if I want to.

I might consider buying more laundry carts when they reappear on Aldi’s shelves so I can put plants in additional places in my house. Because it’s always good to make room for more Aldi house plants.

  1. What a great idea. I’ve had a laundry cart sitting in my laundry room for several years. Honestly I only have a few cleaning products sitting on it. I have a few dozen cacti/succulents crowded on a table in the living room. Now I have a place to put some of them. Thanks for the idea.

  2. That is a great idea! I may hold out for the wooden plant stand when it comes back but this might work for plants or shoes in my house.
