L’Oven Fresh Pains au Chocolat
EDITOR’S NOTE: Updated for 2025.
One item in the baked goods area at Aldi has repeatedly caught my eye. I finally decided to indulge in the French treat, the L’Oven Fresh Pains au Chocolat. These are rolls made from a yeasty dough similar to a crescent, with two bars of dark chocolate baked inside.
These are a product of France. The package says: “Sweet brioche rolls filled with creamy rich chocolate. Pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or in the afternoon as a sweet snack.”
L’Oven Fresh Pains au Chocolat cost $4.39 for a 12.69 package in the late summer of 2025. That’s up from the $2.99 we paid for the same-size package when we first reviewed these in 2019. The package contains eight individually wrapped rolls, which in 2025 comes out to about 55 cents per roll.
If you’re looking out for allergens, the rolls contain wheat and milk. They may also contain eggs.
One 45-gram roll makes one serving, which will net you 190 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 4 grams of saturated fat (20% DV), 180 mg of sodium (8% DV), 23 grams of total carbohydrates (8% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 6 grams of total sugars, 5 grams of added sugars (10% DV), and 2 grams of protein.
Compared to when we first wrote about these in 2019, one 45-gram serving now has 20 grams more sodium, 3 grams more total carbohydrates, 1 gram less of total sugars, and 1 gram less of added sugars.

For as long as we’ve been seeing this in Aldi stores, the rolls are individually wrapped and packaged inside a large plastic bag, which means some unnecessary plastic. It’d be nice to see the packaging reduced.
My family has enjoyed these both for breakfast or as a snack, with some of us sipping on a cup of hot tea as well. The rolls are soft, not overly sweet, and not too chocolaty. Each roll has two thin lines of chocolate filling. If you eat these at room temperature, the chocolate filling has a more solid texture; it’s not a pudding type of texture like what you might get in a doughnut.

While the package has no directions for how to serve these — other than with tea or coffee — many Aldi Reviewer readers insisted these are best served warm, either briefly baked in the oven or quickly heated in the microwave. So, we tried them heated both ways.
For oven warming, I took the advice of a reader who said they bake theirs at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. I checked mine at 4 minutes and kept a close eye on them after that, leaving them in for 8 minutes. They came out flaky and crispy, with nice hot chocolate inside.

My personal favorite way to heat these is actually in the microwave. I put one roll on a small plate and heated it for 10 seconds. It came out warm but not too hot, and the chocolate inside was sufficiently melted. Microwaving them helps preserve their soft texture, which I prefer.
These are somewhat large and fairly filling as far as carb-loaded treats go. We don’t eat them often, but it’s fun to enjoy a French specialty every once in a while, especially one that I can easily pick up at my local Aldi.
The Verdict:
Aldi’s L’Oven Fresh Pains Au Chocolat are imported from France and consist of sweet brioche rolls filled with chocolate. They’re not overly sweet, and they make a good breakfast food or snack. We like them best briefly warmed in the microwave.

Sorry but these were very disappointing because they are not made with a flaky dough as pains au chocolat should be. We will not buy again.
Love these things
omg I buy at least 2 bags of these and I’m not sure if your supposed to heat them but I do and they are so delicious I 100% recommend
Hi Rachael,
Would you be able to tell whether it is vegetarian friendly and it does not contain animal fats like “Lard”.
Thanks
The ingredients list says it contains vegetable oils and fats, so my guess is it’s vegetarian friendly. You could ask Aldi if you want to be certain: https://www.aldireviewer.com/contact-aldi/
My childhood afterschool favorite snack….I am so happy that I can buy them at ALDI.
I was actually reading this because I was hoping somebody would spill the beans on how long to heat these up! I was going to use the oven….. since I have no clue on how long or temperature, I guess the microwave is the best option. DO NOT EAT un-heated! I’m warning you it’s gross!
i heat them in the oven for 8 minutes at 350 and they come out perferct an just a bit flaky.
These are outstanding. My wife and I both love them. Not too sweet, just right! A package of these in the pantry right now!
Yes, they’re awfully good!
