Bremer Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich + Bremer Mediterranean Chicken Pita Sandwich

For several years now, Aldi has occasionally sold limited-edition frozen gyro kits. They come with sliced meat, pita bread, and tzatziki sauce. Aldi has sold traditional gyro kits and, more recently, chicken gyro kits. You add your own toppings such as lettuce, sliced onion, or sliced tomatoes, if desired. We like them both and I often stock our freezer with at least a couple of boxes whenever they show up in stores.

Now, Aldi is selling frozen single-serve gyros that can be quickly and easily heated in the microwave for an on-the-go meal.

They come in either a beef and lamb variety or a chicken variety. The Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich features “precooked beef & lamb gyro slices in a pita flatbread with a Greek yogurt tzatziki sauce pouch.” The Mediterranean Chicken Pita Sandwich features “precooked chicken slices with Mediterranean seasonings in a pita flatbread with a Greek yogurt tzatziki sauce pouch.”

The Bremer Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich and the Bremer Mediterranean Chicken Pita Sandwich are both Aldi Finds. That means they’re in stores for just a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back later. Aldi does not offer online ordering if these are sold out at your local store.

We bought these ourselves for review. I paid $3.29 a piece. Each package is 4.95 ounces, so that comes out to about 66 cents per ounce.

Bremer is an Aldi-exclusive house brand. There is no company by the name of Bremer. Aldi simply puts that name on many frozen entrees it sells, which it may source from various suppliers.

If you’re looking out for allergens, both of these contain wheat.

No matter which variety you purchase, these have plenty of fat and sodium. They also contain, depending on the meat, processed ingredients such as dextrose or natural flavor. The sauce also has some processed ingredients such as various gums and carrageenan.

The packages have directions for microwaving these.

Open the pouch and remove the tzatziki sauce from the sandwich before heating. If the sauce pouch is frozen, thaw by warming in a microwave oven for approximately 15 seconds. (I opted to simply thaw the sauce pouch under warm running water.) Remove the frozen sandwich from the plastic wrapper and wrap it in a paper towel. Heat in the microwave for about 60-90 seconds or until warm, turning halfway. The final internal temperature should be 165 degrees. Garnish with the included sauce.

If desired, you can also add tomatoes, onion, and lettuce (not included).

When you open a package, you’ll find pita bread folded in half with several meat slices tucked inside. The sauce pouch is also tucked inside the pita, so you’ll want to remove that before heating the sandwich.

When I microwaved one sandwich at a time, it was plenty hot after about 40 seconds on each side, for a total of 80 seconds of heating time. You’ll want to be careful to avoid overheating these, as the bread will get hard.

You can eat these without adding any additional toppings, but I added some sliced tomato, sliced red onion, and a bit of spinach I had on hand.

They taste good. The bread is soft and doughy. The meat is well seasoned and there’s a decent if not large amount of it. The sauce is tangy, with definite Greek yogurt notes, and it tastes a little different from the sauce that comes in the larger gyro boxed kits Aldi sells.

Overall, these are pretty good. Aldi often has a slim selection of ready-to-heat single-serving meals, so these gyros might do well at helping to fill that gap if Aldi eventually decided to stock them all the time. For now, though, they’re a limited-time special and you’ll have to stock up while they’re available.

The Verdict:

The Bremer Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich and the Bremer Mediterranean Chicken Pita Sandwich are single-serve frozen entrees that are ready to microwave and enjoy. Aldi sells larger boxed frozen gyro kits at different times of the year, but this is the first time we’ve seen the grocer sell single-serving gyros like this. They taste good and are quick and easy to heat. If you like gyros, give these a try.
