Fremont Fish Market Large and Jumbo Shrimp

After a summer season of travel and indulgent meals, and lots of desserts, I was recently looking to get back on track with healthier dinners. I picked up some large and jumbo frozen shrimp from Aldi. Shrimp are a good high-protein, low- or no-fat food, and they’re versatile enough to toss in salads, serve atop a steak, or eat cold with cocktail sauce.
I found one type of large shrimp and two types of jumbo shrimp in the Regular Buy freezer aisle at my local Aldi at the time of writing. A Regular Buy product is something that Aldi sells year round. What type of shrimp you choose might depend on your personal preferences or how you intend to serve the shrimp. Prices may vary depending on your store location and what part of the country you live in.
Here’s what I found at my store:
- Fremont Fish Market Large Cooked in Shell Shrimp (Peeled and Deveined, Tail On), $6.65 for a 12-ounce bag, or about 55 cents per ounce.
- Fremont Fish Market Jumbo Raw Shrimp (Deveined, Shell and Tail On, Easy Peel), $6.59 for a 12-ounce bag, or about 55 cents per ounce.
- Fremont Fish Market Jumbo Cooked in Shell Shrimp (Peeled and Deveined, Tail On), $6.69 for a 12-ounce bag, or about 56 cents per ounce.
You might be able to find better deals on large or jumbo shrimp at retailers such as Walmart, where I found a one-pound bag of frozen Great Value-brand jumbo shrimp selling for 50 cents per ounce at the time of writing, or a two-pound bag going for 44 cents per ounce.
You might also save a little money per ounce if you buy Aldi frozen medium-sized shrimp, which sold for between 43 and 54 cents per ounce when I wrote about them in May of 2024.
Fremont Fish Market is an Aldi house brand. That means there is no company called Fremont Fish Market. Instead, it’s the name Aldi puts on many of its seafood products to give them a uniform look, and they may be sourced from various suppliers.
All of these shrimp are Best Aquaculture Practices certified, and they’re all farm raised. They’re all products of India. None of them have any preservatives.
Obviously, if you’re looking out for allergens, these contain crustacean shellfish (shrimp).
I prepared all three of these types of shrimp and served them plain and chilled with both Aldi Burman’s Cocktail Sauce and Trader Joe’s Cocktail Sauce for Seafood for dipping. I also added some of these shrimp to the Aldi Little Salad Bar Caesar Salad Kit.
As far as taste and texture go, these shrimp were good, and they didn’t last long among my family. I think these have a better texture — more meaty, less chewy — compared to some of the medium shrimp options Aldi also stocks in its Regular Buy freezer aisle. Despite the slightly higher prices, that alone might sway me to buy the large and jumbo versions more often, depending on how I want to serve them.
One thing we noticed pretty quickly is that there isn’t a big difference between the size of the large shrimp and the jumbo shrimp varieties. When we peeled tails and shells off the different types of shrimp and looked at them side by side, some of the jumbo shrimp were maybe a little fatter, but looking at them from above, it was hard to tell them apart.
I have previously seen people online question whether Aldi jumbo shrimp are large enough to be called “jumbo.” There are no set regulations for size names in the shrimp industry, so “jumbo” can mean different things to different suppliers. Shrimp are instead generally categorized by weight, and the best way to know what kind of shrimp you’re getting is to look at package labels that indicate how many shrimp are in a package and how many shrimp make up one pound. There is a range, but when it comes to jumbo shrimp, most people say there are typically between 21-25 or 21-30 jumbo shrimp per pound.
The Aldi shrimp are sold in 12-ounce packages, and the packages have some numbers:
- Large Cooked in Shell Shrimp: 31-40 shrimp per pound, with 23-30 shrimp per package. (Our package had 30).
- Jumbo Raw Shrimp: 26-30 shrimp per pound, with 19-23 shrimp per package. (Ours had 22.)
- Jumbo Cooked in Shell Shrimp: 26-30 shrimp per pound, with 19-23 shrimp per package. (Ours had 21.)

The Verdict:
Fremont Fish Market Large and Jumbo Shrimp are some of the larger shrimp options available at Aldi. They don’t differ much in size from each other, and I’ve seen larger jumbo shrimp before. You also might be able to find a lower price per ounce on large and jumbo shrimp from other grocery stores. In terms of taste and texture, though, the Aldi shrimp are good and we’d eat them again.
Thank you for all the information, Rachael.
I always have a bag in the freezer. You can use shrimp for a million things, as you mentioned. I believe, sometimes around the holidays Aldi will have Colossal shrimp which is impressive on your appetizer tray.
Oh, I’ll have to look for the colossal shrimp! Thanks for the tip.
