Benton’s Breakfast Biscuits are not biscuits in the American definition. They are not those fluffy, muffin-like things you bake and serve with butter and jam. Instead, these are more like biscuits in the British sense of the word, which is to say they resemble cookies.
The Regular Buy breakfast biscuits are sold in the cereal and granola bar aisle, and they come in three flavors: Brown Sugar & Cinnamon, Blueberry, and Crispy Oat. They are thin, crispy wafers, similar to a crunchy oatmeal cookie. They have a nice amount of sweetness and good crunch.
They are sold in boxes, with each box containing five packets of biscuits, with four biscuits in each packet. One serving size is four biscuits, so these are individually packaged and would be a good on-the-go quick breakfast that could be easily tucked into a backpack or purse. They also would be handy to take on camping trips. While they are perfectly fine for breakfast, they also make a good snack any time of day.
As far as nutrition goes, these breakfast biscuits provide 19 to 20 grams of whole grains, 4 grams of protein, and are 230 calories per serving. The primary ingredients are enriched flour, sugar, whole rolled oats, whole rolled rye, and whole wheat flour. The blueberry flavor contains real dehydrated blueberries.
There is a lot to like about these breakfast biscuits except, perhaps, for one thing: the sugar content. Sugar is the first ingredient in the Crispy Oat flavor and in the Blueberry flavor (although some of the sugar in the Blueberry flavor is from the blueberries). Sugar is the fifth ingredient in the Brown Sugar & Cinnamon flavor, which seems better. One full serving of any flavor packs 11 to 12 grams of sugar, which is almost half of the daily recommended maximum intake of sugar in a typical woman’s diet.
To be fair, one serving is four whole biscuits, and the portion is pretty good-sized. If you halved your portion and only ate two biscuits, maybe alongside some other foods like eggs or non-sugary cereal, it would make for a fairly balanced breakfast. In our house, the breakfast biscuits probably will be relegated to the role of occasional treats.
Aldi’s Benton’s Breakfast Biscuits are like eating crispy oatmeal cookies for breakfast, and they are tasty. They come in three flavors — Brown Sugar & Cinnamon, Blueberry, and Crispy Oat — and we like them all. The portion size is generous, and the only downside is the sugar content. At 11 to 12 grams of sugar per serving, we will enjoy these as treats from time to time. They will be great to take on camping trips as a ready-to-eat breakfast or as a snack, but they probably will not be a regular morning staple in our family.
