Village Bakery Donuts

If you have a hankering for real donuts, the best place to go is your local bakery, pastry shop, or Dunkin’ Donuts. However, Aldi sells some decent donuts for those days when you don’t have time or money to visit the bakery. Just don’t expect to find any long johns or jelly-filled donuts at the discount grocer. Aldi’s donuts are your basic store-bought treats similar to Entemann’s or other brands you would find on the shelves at a regular grocery store. They are good enough that our family doesn’t notice they aren’t name brand.

Aldi offers three flavors: plain, powdered sugar, and chocolate-covered. The store sells a 12-ounce variety pack that contains 15 medium-sized donuts, with 5 plain, 5 powdered sugar, and 5 chocolate frosted donuts in the package. There’s also a 12-ounce package of all chocolate-frosted medium-sized donuts, with 15 in the package. These donuts used to be larger and used to come 12 to a box, but Aldi recently sized them down and, as a result, fit more donuts (15) into each package. In the current packaging, two donuts are considered one serving. Isn’t it nice that you can eat two? Each serving is 190 calories.

Aldi also sells 16-ounce packages of all powdered sugar or all chocolate-frosted donuts. These are smaller, with 1 to 2 dozen per package.

My family is especially fond of the chocolate-frosted variety, which has a semi-hard chocolate shell. We try to save these for breakfast treats in our house, but they disappear quickly, and my husband and I have been known to sneak them together at night after the kids have gone to bed. Don’t tell! The plain and powdered sugar flavors are fine, too, and we taste no difference between them and similar products from regular grocery stores.

The Verdict:

If you have a craving for long johns or custard-filled pastries, head to your local bakery. But if you want a basic plain, powdered sugar, or chocolate-frosted donut, Aldi has some quality choices. These taste similar to Entemann’s or other name-brand donuts you’d find on the shelves at a regular grocery store. Highly recommended.
