Crofton Onion Storer

Often, I only want a few small slices of onion for a single sandwich or an individual salad. Sometimes a casserole recipe calls for only half of an onion. As a result, I’ve used a lot of plastic sandwich bags to store partially used onions. In an effort to be more earth-friendly and save money on plastic sandwich bags, I decided to try the Crofton Onion Storer that Aldi recently sold as a limited-time Special Buy (ALDI Find).

The onion storer is a plastic device that twists open, revealing a container that can store your cut onion half inside it. It actually looks like a red onion, which adds some fun and whimsy to my produce drawer in my refrigerator. The red onion was one of several produce storage options available. Other choices (all of which look like their respective fruits and vegetables) included a tomato, a red pepper, a green pepper, a lemon, a lime, and a yellow onion.

My onion storer sold for $2.99 at the time of publication. It claims to help keep vegetables fresh in the fridge, and the packaging also indicates it is “great for serving.” If you’re only serving a small amount of cut produce, it would look fun served inside one half of one of these produce storers. My onion storer also is BPA free and was made in China.

So, how well does it work?

For starters, I had a little trouble initially opening the onion storer. It opens and closes using a twisting mechanism, but it’s not hard once you get it open and see how it fits together. After the first time opening it, I had no additional trouble closing and opening it.

A look inside the Crofton Onion Storer. The bottom half (on the left) has a textured inner surface. (Click to enlarge.)

The bottom inside the onion storer has a textured surface for the onion to rest on, which may help it to last longer in the refrigerator. I could see how this feature would be beneficial for juicer produce such as tomatoes because it prevents them from sitting in their own juices.

I placed a half-used onion inside, and it fit well.

Some people have asked if the onion storer does a good job keeping onions from smelling up the fridge. I haven’t used it long enough to know. So far, so good. Keep an eye out for updates.

The Verdict:

The Crofton Onion Storer seems to be a good alternative to Tupperware or plastic sandwich bags when you need to store a partially used onion. Other models also are available, including a tomato, a red pepper, a green pepper, a lemon, a lime, and a yellow onion. At the very least, these produce storers will add some style inside your fridge.

  1. I just bought this today. It will help me to easily see if there is already an onion in the fridge! At my local Aldi, (Ocala, FL), it was marked down to $1.99 today.
