Simply Nature Rustic Italian Boule
My family has really come to like sourdough bread lately. When my husband and I travel out of state to visit some of my relatives, we’re often treated to homemade sourdough from a local hobby farm there. As a result, I’ve been more likely to notice the different types of sourdough available at Aldi.
Admittedly, commercially produced grocery store sourdough might not be a fair comparison to homemade sourdough. However, Aldi sells a few different sourdough options, and some of them are actually pretty good.
I recently picked up this boule loaf at Aldi. Boule is French for “ball,” and it’s a round loaf like this one is a traditional French bread shape.
We buy Aldi products with our own funds. Simply Nature Rustic Italian Boule is $4.39 for a 24-ounce loaf at my local Aldi in 2026. The loaf in this review was 50% off, coming in at $2.20.
This appears to be a Regular Buy that’s in stores all the time. I’ve seen some people say this is a Seasonal Item stocked only during the fall months. I most recently spotted it available for purchase on Aldi’s website in June of 2026, though, so I think it’s a year-round thing. It’s stocked in the baked goods aisle among the other types of bread.
If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains wheat. This loaf is kosher.
Traditional sourdough is prepared with a fermented sourdough culture that included good bacteria and natural yeast in a flour and water mixture. That fermentation brings some potential benefits, including antioxidants, a lower glycemic index to reduce blood sugar spikes, and possible improved digestion because sourdough functions like a prebiotic that feeds good gut bacteria.
One thing to look out for with grocery store sourdough is whether it’s true sourdough with fermentation. Some grocery store brands may use yeast or ascorbic acid instead of cultures. A real loaf of sourdough will list cultures or fermented ingredients on the label.
Fortunately, this loaf has a short ingredients list, and it includes sourdough culture. The full list is: organic wheat flour, organic sourdough culture (organic wheat flour, water), water, sea salt, and organic enzymes.

One 2-ounce serving (about 2 slices) has 140 calories, no fat or saturated fat, 300 mg of sodium (13% DV), 28 grams of total carbohydrates (10% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), no total sugars or added sugars, and 5 grams of protein.
This bread has a nice tangy classic sourdough flavor, and it’s good served with sandwich fixings. I also like to toast it and top it with mashed avocado, everything bagel seasoning, and sliced tomatoes for a hearty breakfast.
The Verdict:
Simply Nature Rustic Italian Boule is a sourdough loaf in a traditional round shape. It contains actual sourdough culture, and we like this for everything from sandwiches to avocado toast. This is worth trying if you like rustic loaves, sourdough, or are just looking for something different in the bread aisle.

I have tried all the sourdough offerings at Aldi and Trader Joes and this is my favorite. I have also seen alot of Instgram and tiktok posts about it recently so it is having a mini moment.
My favorite sourdough at aldis is the everything version. More flavor and i find an increased chew from the added moisture from the onion bits added. Tends to stay fresher longer than most breads, and obviously freezes well when the time comes
