L’Oven Fresh Classic Kaiser Buns

Burgers are a staple in my house. It’s fun to fire up the gas grill or the charcoal grill and toss a few patties on to serve alongside a fresh salad or some air-fried French fries. Typically, we’ll just use standard hamburger buns when we make burgers. Aldi sells regular hamburger buns that are just fine. Sometimes, though, we want something that feels a little more substantial or even a bit fancy. Aldi sells fancier buns, too, including some sturdy Kaiser buns.

Kaiser buns or Kaiser rolls are known for having shallow cuts on the top that give them a distinct appearance. They have been around since at least the mid to late 1700s, and they have Austrian origins. They may have been named for Emperor (Kaiser) Franz Joseph I of Austria, who reigned from 1848-1916. They can be used as a base for a variety of sandwiches or burgers.

L'Oven Fresh Classic Kaiser Buns

L’Oven Fresh Classic Kaiser Buns cost $2.99 at the time of publication for a 20.5-ounce package that contains eight buns. That comes out to about 37 cents per serving. That’s a higher price than the traditional hamburger buns at Aldi, which cost around 10 cents per serving at the time we reviewed them.

For further comparison, Walmart’s website advertises Kaiser buns for about 66 cents per serving at the time of writing. You might be able to find some cheaper Kaiser buns if you actually wander around the baked good aisle at Walmart, but at first glance, the Aldi Kaiser buns look like a good deal if you want Kaiser buns and not plain burger buns.

These Kaiser buns are a Regular Buy, which means they’re available at Aldi year round. They’re stocked in the baked goods aisle among other types of buns and breads.

The primary ingredient is unbleached enriched flour (including wheat flour and malted barley flour). These also contain some preservatives (not surprising for store-bought buns) and some processed ingredients such as natural flavors. They are kosher certified.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain wheat.

These have almost double the calories of regular hamburger buns from Aldi, and they also have a lot of carbs and quite a bit of added sugar, so they’re not great for you.

One bun contains 200 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat (3% DV), no saturated fat or cholesterol, 370 mg of sodium (16% DV), 37 grams of total carbohydrates (13% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 6 grams of total sugars, and 5 grams of added sugars (10% DV).

These Kaiser buns are perfect if you want a more upscale burger experience. They’re strong enough to handle a burger loaded with all kinds of toppings, but they still have a soft enough texture that they’re easy to chew. They’re also great served with lunchmeat and cheese, or serve them warm with Italian beef.

The Verdict:

L’Oven Fresh Classic Kaiser Buns are ideal when you want a fancier sandwich or burger. They’re sturdy enough to hold a lot of sandwich fillings and toppings, and they taste fine. We can’t tell any difference between these and other traditional grocery store Kaiser buns.

  1. Unfortunately, these are only available during the summer months at my Aldi’s in Sarasota, FL. I wish they would have them year-round as they always sell out.

    • Thanks for pointing that out. Now I’m wondering if they’re seasonal at my local stores. Our store signage is not always clear when products are Seasonal Items versus Regular Buys. I’ll have to look for these on my next shopping trip.

  2. I live in Florida this should not be considered a seasonal item in my opinion. When I asked the worker that is what she stated they are seasonal. Like I stated they always sell out.
