Specially Selected Dulce de Leche and Strawberry Cheesecake Super Premium Ice Cream

Ice cream is the way to my heart. I love ice cream no matter the season. It’s my favorite dessert for any event or holiday, more so than cake, cheesecake, cookies, brownies, or pie (unless those treats are served a la mode). When I used to work the late shift as a copy editor at a small newspaper, I’d sometimes stop at a local 24/7 grocery store after work to pick up some ice cream to enjoy while I wound down after a long night.

Aldi has a pretty good — if small — selection of ice cream. You won’t find too many exotic or creative flavor combinations, but Aldi carries the basics and then some: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, moose tracks (quite possibly the best ice flavor ever), cookie dough, and cookies and cream, to name a few.

The great thing about Aldi, though, is how the store rotates different limited-time products into its lineup. I’ve seen some unique flavors make their way through the Aldi Find freezer section, including pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon, St. Patrick’s Day flavors, and egg nog and peppermint bark.

This winter, Aldi sold dulce de leche and strawberry cheesecake ice cream flavors. I bought both to indulge in at home.

Specially Selected Dulce de Leche and Strawberry Cheesecake Super Premium Ice Cream cost $2.99 for one pint at the time of publication.

These are Aldi Finds, which means they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store receives one shipment, and once that’s gone, you won’t be able to buy these ice cream flavors anymore unless Aldi decides to bring them back later. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products not in stock at your local store.

These are sold under the Specially Selected brand, which is not a company. It’s the private label Aldi uses for various gourmet-style foods such as snow crab clusters, macarons, mini scones, and more.

The container describes this as “dulce de leche ice cream with dulce de leche swirl.”

This ice cream tastes fantastic. It’s creamy, with thick swirls of dulce de leche. Dulce de leche is similar to a caramel sauce, but it’s made with sweetened condensed milk while caramel is made with sugar and water. It has a delicious flavor similar to toffee or butterscotch. This ice cream went quickly when I offered it to my family.

If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains milk and eggs. It may contain peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, and soy.

This does include some processed ingredients including corn syrup and natural flavor, but that often seems to be the case with more exotic ice cream flavors like this. It’s easier to find ice cream with simple ingredients if you’re sticking with basic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry.

The container describes this as “strawberry cheesecake ice cream with strawberries and graham cracker swirl.”

This tastes as advertised: creamy, rich strawberry cheesecake-flavored ice cream with generous swirls of graham cracker. This disappeared quickly in my house as well.

This also includes some processed ingredients such as soy lecithin, natural flavor corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and some gums. Again, that seems to be common with ice cream that isn’t a basic flavor like vanilla or chocolate.
