EDITOR’S NOTE: We’ve heard from readers and have seen comments on social media claiming that Aldi has removed these pillows from store shelves, possibly due to a recall. We’ve reached out to Aldi for clarification and will update this post if or when we receive a response.

In the 1964 stop motion animated Christmas movie, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the title character finds himself on the Island of Misfit Toys. It’s a place where unwanted or unloved toys live. Many of the toys have visible defects, such as a spotted elephant or a train with square wheels.

Recently, Aldi customers on various Aldi fan social media pages observed that a certain item in the middle aisle looked like it came straight from the Island of Misfit Toys.

It’s a sherpa pillow that looks like a gingerbread man. Except, it looks … a little funny.

It looks like this:

Shoppers are talking about the beady-looking vacant eyes, the “armpit icing,” and the lopsided smile. It’s especially remarkable when you compare the Aldi gingerbread pillow to, say, other more attractive-looking gingerbread man pillows at retailers such as Target.

And yet, people find the Aldi gingerbread man pillow to be adorable despite its apparent shortcomings. It’s become a sort of collector’s item. People are purposely looking for it in Aldi stores and posting when they find it.

The Aldi Merry Moments Gingerbread Man Sherpa Pillow is $9.99. It’s an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time. You can’t order it online if it’s sold out at your local store.

This pillow and is being sold alongside some other holiday-themed sherpa pillows, including a candy cane, gingerbread house, snowflake, Christmas tree, and snowman. But it’s the gingerbread man that’s gotten the most attention.

People are creating all kinds of tongue-in-cheek social media posts about the pillow.

Some people have taken to calling the gingerbread pillow the “gingerderp” or “gingerdwerp” pillow.

In fact, all the social media attention has made the pillow so popular that it’s starting to disappear from store shelves.

And, as you can see, this pillow looks like it fits in rather nicely with misfit toys. We think Rudolph would approve.

  1. I think this is adorable. Was at Aldi yesterday to finish my Thanksgiving shopping and didn’t have time to browse the “Aisle,” just stuck to the list, but probably would have stopped to look at it if I had. Sent the article link to my daughter, who already responded back that she will be on a mission to find one! Too cute!

  2. I bought this because my daughter just loved him when she saw him. He’s growing on me as the cutest ugly thing I own now 😂

  3. Got the last one in my Aldi last night. I have him sitting in the lobby at my work next to the candy cane pillow and a container of free mini candy canes for our guests, hoping he doesn’t get stolen.
