Trader Joe’s Strawberry Overnight Oats

Overnight oats have been a thing for a several years now. The concept is relatively simple. Instead of taking the time to cook hot oatmeal in the morning for breakfast, you take a few minutes the night before and mix together uncooked oats, milk or a dairy alternative, and possibly other ingredients such as chia seeds, yogurt, maple syrup, a dash of salt or vanilla extract, or some cut fruit, if desired. You put the mixture in a container (usually a single-serving container) in the refrigerator, and the liquid ingredients soak into the oats overnight, softening them and creating a grab-and-go breakfast option for the morning. All you need is a spoon to enjoy them. You can eat overnight oats cold directly from the fridge, or some people prefer to warm them a bit in the microwave.

While it’s easy to make your own overnight oats, you can also buy them from Trader Joe’s, which is a cousin to Aldi. They’re stocked in the refrigerated section near the yogurt and milk, and they’re packaged in containers that look similar to a single-serving yogurt cup. I found several flavors of overnight oats, including vanilla and peanut butter. I ended up picking up a strawberry version of overnight oats, which I saw highlighted in the most recent Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer that promoted a variety of summer products.

The label describes this as “rolled oats soaked in a coconut beverage.”

This is gluten free and kosher certified. If you’re looking out for allergens, it contains coconut milk.

This has a very wholesome-looking ingredients list with all easily recognizable items and no added sugar. The full ingredients list is coconut beverage (water, coconut), rolled oats, strawberry puree (strawberries, apple juice concentrate), strawberry puree concentrate, strawberry juice concentrate, and salt.

These don’t necessarily look all that exciting when you open the container. They’re essentially cold, soggy oats. I gave them a good stir and ate them as is, but you could also add some chopped strawberries or other fruit if you want to vary the texture. Despite having no added cane sugar, these are very sweet. I could definitely taste the strawberry juice, and the apple juice concentrate flavor comes through clearly as well. These don’t have much of a coconut flavor, as the liquid that the oats are soaked in tastes mostly fruity. They’re filling and make for a healthy breakfast or snack, although if you’re not accustomed to eating cold oatmeal they might take some getting used to.

The Verdict:

Trader Joe’s Strawberry Overnight Oats feature oats soaked in a “coconut beverage.” These also contain strawberry puree and apple juice concentrate, and they have a sweet, fruity flavor. Their sweetness comes entirely from fruit juice and puree, though, as there is no added sugar in these overnight oats. If you want a filling and healthy breakfast that is quick and easy, these are worth a try.
