Trader Joe’s sells a lot of snacks, and some of them are rather unusual. One of their more unique snacks is their Sweet and Salty Umami Crunchies Rice Crackers, which looked fascinating, and I decided that I wanted try and review them.

Umami isn’t actually a specific food but a savory flavor, and it can be bought in many forms, including soy sauce, seasoning, and, of course, these Trader Joe’s crunchy snacks.

These Trader Joe’s Sweet & Salty Umami Crunchies Rice Crackers cost $2.99 for a 6.35-ounce bag at the time of purchase, which comes out to about 47 cents per ounce. While I couldn’t find anything quite like this at other stores to compare, it’s cheaper than all of the other umami chip-like snacks I found.

These are a product of Vietnam.

The ingredients, for the most part, are relatively simple. The ingredients are rice, rice oil, soy sauce (water, soybeans, rice, salt), sugar, and modified tapioca starch. If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain soy. They are gluten free.

The Verdict:

Trade Joe’s Sweet & Salty Umami Crunchies Rice Crackers are a bit like small rice cakes. They’re salty, but, contrary to the name, I didn’t find them to be very sweet. Some of our other taste testers thought these had a nice balance between salty and sweet. That being said, these are pretty good. They’re very crunchy and look a bit like tiny round hashbrown patties, but these don’t contain potatoes. I’ve never had anything quite like these, and while they might not be my favorite snack, I would buy them again.
