L’Oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnys

I like a good sandwich, but sometimes I want fewer carbs and fewer calories, and that’s when I like Aldi’s L’Oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnys.

These are slightly wider than an English muffin but only approximately half an inch tall. They are skinny, as their name says. They come in an 8-pack, are pre-sliced for easy sandwich-making, and can be purchased in whole wheat or multi-grain varieties.

L’Oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnys are 100 calories per roll, with 170 mg of sodium, 1 gram of sugar, and no saturated fat. In contrast, Aldi’s Whole Grain White bread, which is popular in our house, has 140 calories per 2-slice serving, 260 mg of sodium, and 4 grams of sugar.

The packaging for the multi-grain Sandwich Skinnys variety promises 12 or more grams of whole grains per serving. The multi-grain rolls are made with ingredients such as whole wheat flour, unbleached enriched wheat flour, wheat, rye, corn, oats, millet, triticale, brown rice, and barley.

Aldi’s Sandwich Skinnys are a great choice if you want fewer carbs, fewer calories, or simply want to change up your sandwiches a little. They are best with lunch meat but would also work with tuna or chicken salad, humus, or whatever you like. While the bread is thin, it is hearty enough that you can put mayo and/or mustard, some cheese, a tomato slice, a few pickle slices, and lettuce on your sandwich without it falling apart. You’ll probably want to eat your sandwich right away, though, as the Sandwich Skinnys are more prone to getting soggy from mayo and other toppings. A fully assembled sandwich might not hold up as well in a lunchbox.

I’ve infrequently purchased Sandwich Skinnys for years with no problems. However, when I recently purchased the multi-grain Sandwich Skinnys, I did notice something unusual. A friend I had over for lunch found two or three very small tough, fibrous pieces in her bread. A few days later, I found one in my own sandwich. I’m guessing it was a piece of oat or barley or some similar grain. My friend described it as similar to when you eat a green bean that still has a stem end on it. We simply spit out the tough pieces and finished our sandwiches. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve never had a problem before, so I’m hopeful it was just an issue with that particular batch.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s L’Oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnys are a lower-carb and lower-calorie alternative to regular bread. I like them because they are a little healthier, and they are a fun way to change up an ordinary sandwich. Sandwich Skinnys work well with lunch meat, chicken salad, or whatever sandwich toppings you like. I did notice a few tough, fibrous pieces of something that looks like a grain in the last package of Sandwich Skinnys I bought. I’ve bought Sandwich Skinnys for years with no problems, so I’m hoping it was just an issue with that one batch. Otherwise, these are recommended.

  1. I used to love Aldi Sandwich Skinnys and ate 2 packages a week. However, a month or so ago they completely changed. They are hard and tasteless, and I have taken the last few packages back. They’ve gone from very good to inedible. I’m extremely and disappointed and will never purchase them again.

I also like em ,,,,, but Im not going to slice them in half every time I use them …they stick together and the slice is way off center. Ive got pieces of it all over the counter tryin to make on sandwich…boo

    • The product quality has gone to hell.
The bread sticks together and even trying to slice it, it falls apart.
Also it no longer taste fresh any more.
Unfortunately I’m not purchasing it anymore and recommend no one else does

    • Really they’ve also been cut for me without problems or having to cut myself. I still would purchase them bc I haven’t had any complaint myself.

  3. Where is the expiration date on the package? I have searched all over it~ front & back to no acail

  4. Agree with other posters sometime in May or June of 2018 these changed and are now stale beyond the eddible range. I keep trying them in hopes they get better but I am now giving up. To bad because I like this style of healthier bread and the cost of these at Publix is like $5.00 which is to much imo to pay for a half a loaf of bread.

  5. I had been purchasing Oroweat Sandwich Thins since 2013. I loved the flavor, that they were only 100 calories, all crust, and lots of fiber. Other than tortillas, they were my only bread.
Then they changed their recipe. Now the slices are thicker, puffier but harder, and they have 50% more calories, more sugar, less fiber. The flavor is like cardboard and the texture is like a mouthful of dry seeds and field dust.
    (Former Oroweat Sandwich Thins,24 pre-sliced rolls, 1 had 43g, 100 calories, 5g fiber, 1g sugar; New Oroweat Sandwich Thins, 18 count, 1 has 57g, 150 calories, 3g fiber, 3g sugar.)
I stopped buying them. I wrote Bimbo Bakeries (really) an impassioned letter begging for the return to their former recipe. No reply as of 5-18-19.
Then a new Aldi store opened near me and I discovered Aldi’s Sandwich Thins. 100 calories, 1g fat, 170mg sodium, taste similar to the original Oroweat recipe. I buy up several packages of multi-grain every time I go. I keep them frozen as I did the Oroweat, and pop them in the toaster oven for lovely toasty-tender perfection. The flavor is not as good as I remember the Oroweat being, but the toppings make them work just fine at 100 calories. Very satisfied.
I may write them now and beg them not to change their recipe as Oroweat did.

  6. Where can I buy the Multigrain Sandwich Skinnys 90 cal.? ? Now Aldi’s has only the larger, harder, higher cal. version.

Just purchased these. The package says they expire in a week and a half. We love similar product from other brands. These were not edible. dry, no taste, crumble apart and while they are split, the two halves can’t be separated. Is Aldi open to returns?

  8. I purchased some multi grain sandwich skinnies from the farirview hgts., il store ,friday the 13th of march. the package was marked best use by 03/24/2020. well , today is 3/19. to my surprise, the breads are full of mold. the package has not even been opened!!! it was sitting on my kitchen counter the whole time. not in any extreme temperatures or humidity. I do not have the time or energy to return the product. I will never but this product again. very disappointed!!!!

    • I always keep the package I’m using in the refrigerator and all the extra packages in the freezer. I don’t go through bread quick enough to leave it out. I don’t eat the bread cold. Just a few seconds in the toaster knocks the chill off and makes them come apart easier. I bought several packages with $1 off stickers because they were short dated. Froze them. Used them. And never had any mold. My mom always leaves her bread out and it always molds. I can’t seem to convince her that my way is better. 🙂

  9. Wow! All the negative. I don’t have any problem with these and I buy them often. They don’t fall apart. They aren’t dry. They seem perfectly fine to me. I buy ahead and keep mine frozen. The toaster can either toast them or warm them just enough to separate. Other than those tiny little holes where the mayonnaise oozes out, I have no complaints. LOL!

  10. The content changed last week. The new ones have less fiber and 50% more calories.

  11. These are not very good They stick together Hard to cut. And most of the things the other people said

  12. I have always loved L’Oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnies. Including driving many miles to stock up and freeze them. Now I live much closer and get to Aldis every week. So I’ve been buying them regularly. HOWEVER, I cannot find an expiration date. AND the last three packages I get have gone moldy only a day or so after purchasing! I’ve taken one package back for a refund but won’t bother anymore because I’ll never buy them again. I am so disappointed though. And by the way, the blueberries from the produce section have also been sporting fuzzy mold after only a day or two in the fridge.

  13. I purchase a package of the sandwich skinny . The two pieces that are to come apart do not . I end up with a pile of crumbs .. very unhappy
Could not make my sandwich . The expiration dates still 2 days from now I very unsatisfied

  14. I have realized that they freeze the skinnies. I’ve also noticed in those that I’ve purchased recently are different . there is now four grams of fiber in them instead of 5. They are not as dark as the whole wheat ones that I have purchased before and they do not taste the same way. When I saw the ingredients I thought the whole 100% whole wheat was actually more nutritious with more fiber than the whole grains and that’s what I need is a fiber. I never do slice them I just very carefully slowly pull them apart and they come apart. I hate when companies change things and then don’t let you know that they do. I’ll still get them because there’s four grams of fiber but I’m not happy.

  15. I bought these because the my usual bagels weren’t available. They are NOT good. God bless those of you who like them. I feel like they are a waste if money. They taste stake and I have to eat 2 of them at a time.

    2 thumbs down for me.
