Specially Selected Lobster Mac & Cheese

EDITOR’S NOTE: We first reviewed this in 2017. We bought it again and updated this review in the summer of 2025. Aldi most recently sold this in December of 2025 for $7.49 for 18 ounces.

From time to time, Aldi likes to trot out a pair of seafood pasta dishes as part of its frozen Aldi Find rotation. One is a lobster mac & cheese, and the other is a shrimp & lobster bake.

Let’s take a look at the lobster mac & cheese here.

Specially Selected Lobster Mac & Cheese

Specially Selected Lobster Mac & Cheese cost $7.49 for an 18-ounce package in 2025. That’s about 42 cents per ounce. With two servings per box, that’s around $3.75 per serving. We bought this with our own funds.

As mentioned earlier, this is an Aldi Find. That means it’s in stores for a short time only. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone until whenever Aldi brings it back. This usually shows up in our local Aldi stores at least once a year, if not more often. You can’t order it online from Aldi if it’s out of stock at your area store.

The package describes this as “premium lobster and cavatappi pasta blended with cheddar, fontina, and asiago cheeses and topped with breadcrumbs.”

If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains milk, shellfish (lobster), and wheat.

The ingredients list includes cooked pasta, lobster, cream, various cheeses, sea salt, tomato, “cheese flavor” (maltodextrin, whey solids, natural cheddar cheese flavor, and salt), lobster extract, black pepper, cayenne chili pepper, and breadcrumbs that include wheat flour and parmesan.

One serving (half of the package) has 290 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 5 grams of saturated fat (25% DV), 590 mg of sodium (26% DV), 34 grams of total carbohydrates (12% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 2 grams of total sugars, no added sugars, and 19 grams of protein.

This frozen entree comes in your standard plastic tray covered in film. There are two ways to cook it: conventional oven and microwave.

The conventional oven instructions, which are listed as preferred, involve preheating the oven to 400 degrees, removing the tray from the sleeve, peeling off the film, and then cooking the tray on a baking sheet for 40 minutes, or until the internal temperature is 165 degrees. Once cooked, you let it sit for two minutes before eating.

The microwave instructions, by contrast, call for piercing the film 3-4 times, then cooking on high heat for 8-9 minutes, following by allowing it to stand for one minute before stirring and serving.

The box says the tray is good for two servings. It’s not a massive amount, but we thought it was generous enough for two people, especially if supplemented with a side or two, which makes a lot of sense (to us, at least) with a dish like this one.

Overall, this entree is pretty good. The pasta is good, with a solid white cheddar-style cheese sauce. Baking it gives it a little crispiness on top that you’ll be familiar with if you’ve ever baked macaroni and cheese. Also, while this contains black pepper and cayenne chili pepper, it’s not spicy.

Most importantly, there are real, honest-to-goodness chunks of lobster meat in the mixture. My biggest fear on something like this was that it would scrimp on the lobster, but that’s not the case — there’s a decent amount here, enough that you’ll feel like it’s a real lobster mac and cheese, not a mac and cheese with specks of lobster in it.

Could you make a better version from scratch? Sure. But this is pretty good for a frozen grocery store entree.

The Verdict:

We found the Specially Selected Lobster Mac & Cheese to be a solid entree, with a good set of ingredients, good flavor, and a fair amount of seafood.
