Earth Grown Butter Chickpeas & Veggies
I’ve been slowly working my way through sampling some newer vegetarian Indian pouch meals from Aldi. They come in a few different varieties, including tikka masala, korma, and butter chicken.
Here, I’m taking a closer look at the butter chicken-style meal. Because this is vegetarian, it doesn’t contain chicken but instead features chickpeas and other veggies.
This is sold under the Earth Grown brand. That isn’t a company. Rather, it’s the name Aldi puts on many of its vegetarian products. Some Earth Grown products are also vegan.
Earth Grown Butter Chickpeas & Veggies appears to be a Regular Buy. That means you should be able to find it at Aldi all year.
We buy products for review using our own money. I paid $2.85 for a 10.05-ounce package at my local store in November of 2024. That’s around 28 cents per ounce.
This is a product of India. The package indicates this has a mild spice level. It’s kosher and was certified vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association. The pouch is BPA free.
If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains milk. It may contain traces of peanuts, tree nuts, and soy.
The full ingredients list includes water, chickpeas, potato, carrot, onion, sweet potato, spinach, tomato, cream (milk), tomato paste, and 2% or less of butter (milk), sunflower oil, garlic paste, ginger paste, salt, spices, chili paste, and fenugreek leaf. It would be helpful if Aldi specified what “spices” are in this.
One pouch makes one serving. A serving will net you 251 calories, 9 grams of total fat (11% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% DV), 620 mg of sodium (27% DV), 7 grams of dietary fiber (25% DV), 8 grams of total sugars, 1 gram of added sugars (2% DV), and 12 grams of protein.

The pouch has directions for heating this in the microwave or on the stovetop.
To microwave, tear the pouch two inches to vent. Heat the pouch on high for 90 seconds. Carefully remove and let stand one minute. Pour into a serving dish and serve.
To heat on the stovetop, empty the pouch contents into a saucepan. Gently heat for 3-5 minutes. Do not boil. Stir occasionally to heat through. Serve in a bowl and enjoy.
You can serve this on its own or with naan, rice, or a protein of your choice.

I microwaved this and served it with some basmati rice. Of the three different Indian pouch meals I’ve tried, this one is average. It’s on the upper end of mild in terms of spiciness, and it tastes okay but isn’t all that memorable.
The Verdict:
Earth Grown Butter Chickpeas & Veggies features chickpeas, sweet potatoes, spinach, and other vegetables in a butter chicken-style sauce. It’s a little spicy, although the package says it’s “mild.” This meal is all right but not something we’ll be buying again.

Hello! Wondering where to find this in Aldi; is it near dry goods like rice, etc? Thank you!
Good question! Yes, in our local stores, it’s near the dry pasta, mac and cheese boxes, canned soups, etc.
I agree – it’s too mild. I added some hot sauce to spice it up a bit. It was fine then..
