Aldi has been selling pancakes & sausage on a stick for years. They were among our earliest product reviews back when Aldi Reviewer first started. My family liked them back then, and we often ate them on weekends when we had more time to enjoy big breakfasts with eggs, sausage, and the like. They’re a fun breakfast food that is a mashup of traditional pancakes and breakfast meat and a corn dog.

Because it’s been a while, I decided to revisit Breakfast Best Pancakes & Sausage On-A-Stick to see if they’re still as good as we remembered.

Breakfast Best Original Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick are a Regular Buy. That means you should be able to find them at Aldi all year.

I bought these for review purposes for $6.29 for a 25-ounce box at my local store. That comes out to 25 cents per ounce. Each box has 10 pancakes and sausages on a stick, which comes out to about 63 cents per serving.

For comparison, Jimmy Dean Original Pancakes and Sausage on a Stick cost $9.98 for a 30-ounce box of 12 at Walmart at the time of writing, which is about 33 cents per ounce or 83 cents per serving. I also found Walmart-brand Great Value Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick selling for $7.46 for a 30-ounce box of 12 at the time of writing, which is about 25 cents per ounce or 62 cents per serving.

So, the Aldi version is cheaper than name brand and is priced very similar to other store brands.

If you’re looking out for allergens, the Aldi pancakes and sausage on a stick contain wheat, soy, milk, and egg.

These not surprisingly contain some processed ingredients, including dextrose, corn syrup solids, and artificial flavor.

One single-stick serving has 210 calories, with 90 calories from fat. A serving also has 10 grams of total fat (15% DV), 3.5 grams of saturated fat (16% DV), 420 mg of sodium (18% DV), 26 grams of total carbohydrates (9% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (9% DV), 13 grams of sugars (it’s not clear how much is total sugars and how much added sugar is in these), and 5 grams of protein.

The box has directions for heating these in a conventional oven, a microwave, or an air fryer.

To bake, preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Place the product on a shallow baking pan and bake for 22-24 minutes if frozen, or 16-18 minutes if thawed.

To microwave, heat frozen product on a microwave-safe dish for 55-60 seconds or until hot on high power. If thawed, heat for 30-35 seconds or until hot.

To air fry, preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees. Place the product in the air fryer basket. Do not double stack. Heat for 14-16 minutes if frozen, or 11-13 minutes if thawed, or until hot.

My family and I tried heating these several different ways, and they all left us a bit disappointed.

We started by heating some of these from frozen in the microwave. While they were heated all the way through during the instructed amount of cooking time, the batter came out slightly doughy on the inside.

What they look like on the inside after microwaving. Notice the doughy parts.

Next, I decided to try air frying them from frozen. They came out even more doughy on the inside after air frying. The outside was so brown and crispy that we didn’t feel like we could air fry these a few minutes more to get the inside less doughy.

After air frying. It’s really doughy on the inside.

I finally decided to try baking these from frozen, since I’m pretty sure that’s how we used to heat these years ago when we bought them more regularly. Baking takes the longest amount of time, so it’s less ideal if you don’t have a lot of time to spare in the mornings. These turned out well done on the outside and still slightly doughy on the inside after baking, but they were better than our attempts at microwaving or air frying them.

After baking from frozen. Still a little doughy, but better.

Ultimately, I thawed the remaining servings in my fridge and air fried one of them from thawed, while microwaving the other one from thawed. These turned out much better, and the air fried one was fantastic: crispy on the outside, and not doughy at all on the inside. The microwaved one was not doughy, although the breading was obviously softer.

Microwaved from thawed on the left, air fried from thawed on the right.

So, I recommend heating these from thawed for the best consistency. Unfortunately, that means these require a bit of time and work to prepare, so they may not be best for busy mornings.

The Verdict:

Breakfast Best Original Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick are an Aldi knockoff of a Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast product.

These are sold frozen, and they can be heated from frozen. However, we had problems with the breading being doughy on the inside no matter whether we microwaved them or air fried them. Baking them was a little better.

Ultimately, we found that the best way to prepare these is to thaw them in the refrigerator overnight, and then heat them from thawed. When heated from a thawed state, they turn out great. We especially like air frying them, as the outside gets nice and crispy.

  1. We used to eat them all the time but decided to quit because the cornbread is really fully of grease of some sort and can’t be healthy at all.
