Aldi Introduces Choceur Choco Changer Chocolate Bars

This post is an open thread

The Choceur chocolate line at Aldi is a good one. This Aldi private label features a variety of treats, including peanut butter cups, chocolate bars with hazelnut paste (my favorite for making s’mores), and even chocolate bars with peanuts and cornflakes. Aldi also rotates certain Choceur products onto store shelves for a limited time for certain holidays, with boxed chocolates showing up for Valentine’s Day, chocolate peanut butter bunnies hopping into stores for Easter, and chocolate apples dropping in for fall.

Choceur is not a company. You won’t find any manufacturer called Choceur. Instead, that’s the name Aldi puts on its chocolate products, which it sources from various suppliers. So, Aldi Choceur chocolate can potentially come from a variety of places and different chocolate producers.

With that in mind, I was fascinated to see that the latest weekly Aldi ad features some new Choceur chocolate bars that emphasize sustainability. They’re called Choco Changer Bars, and the labels state “Be a Choco Changer & Support Cocoa Farmers.”

The bars feature the Fair Trade certification logo from Germany-based Fairtrade International. The website for Fairtrade International states it is “co-owned by more than 2 million farmers and workers who earn fairer prices, build stronger communities, and have control over their futures.”

In addition, these chocolate bars also have a Tony’s Open Chain seal. Tony’s Open Chain is an “industry-led initiative” promoting an “open and transparent” supply chain.

Choceur Choco Changer Bars are Aldi Finds, which means they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store will get one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back later. Aldi will not offer online ordering for these after they’re sold out at your local store.

These are scheduled to arrive in stores on April 10th, 2024.

These cost $2.49 for a 5-ounce bar at the time of publication. That comes out to about 50 cents per ounce. These bars have six 25-gram servings per bar, which comes out to about 42 cents per serving.

These are made in Belgium by a chocolate company called Libeert. This chocolate maker has been around since 1923, and their website states that sustainability is a priority as they create treats for a fourth generation of chocolate consumers.

The Choceur bars at Aldi come in three different flavors:

  • Dark Chocolate with Salty Fudge and Almond
  • Milk Chocolate with Brownie and Salted Caramel
  • Milk Chocolate with Nougat Honeycomb and Sea Salt

These bars all bear a Fairtrade mark with an arrow to one side. Fairtrade International explains the mark with an arrow is placed on products that contain multiple ingredients, such as chocolate bars or cereal, as opposed to single-ingredient products such as bananas or coffee that bear a Fairtrade mark with no arrow.

Fairtrade states of products with the mark with the arrow: “All the ingredients that are available under Fairtrade conditions have to be Fairtrade (e.g., all the cocoa, sugar and vanilla). The minimum total Fairtrade content is 20 percent but many companies go above and beyond that. You will find the percentages on the back of the pack.”

Fairtrade International adds that the mark with an arrow is also “used on single-ingredient products that have been sourced using ‘mass balance.’ This is possible only for cocoa, sugar, fruit juice and tea. This means that companies purchase 100 percent of the volume of ingredients that they label as Fairtrade, but do not need to keep it separate and may mix it with non-Fairtrade ingredients at some point in the supply chain.” You can learn more about mass balance and fair trade here.
