Aldi, Trader Joe’s Part of Frozen Organic Strawberry Recall

EDITOR’S NOTE: The FDA updated this recall in June of 2023 with additional suppliers

On March 17, 2023, the FDA and CDC announced they were investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A infections linked to frozen organic strawberries. The agencies traced the outbreak to certain farms in Baja California with strawberries distributed through companies California Splendor and Scenic Fruit.

California Splendor distributed the following affected strawberries:

  • Kirkland Signature 4-lb. bag Frozen Organic Whole Strawberries in certain states with specific lot codes.

Scenic Fruit distributed the following affected strawberries:

  • Simply Nature, Organic Strawberries, Best By 06/14/2024
  • Vital Choice, Organic Strawberries, BEST BY 05/20/2024
  • Kirkland Signature, Organic Strawberries, Best If Used By 10/08/2024
  • Made With, Organic Strawberries, Best Before 11/20/2024
  • PCC Community Markets, Organic Strawberries, Best By 29/10/2024
  • Trader Joe’s, Organic Tropical Fruit Blend with the following Best By dates: 04/25/24; 05/12/24; 05/23/24; 05/30/24; 06/07/24

Simply Nature is an Aldi private label. Kirkland Signature is a Costco private label.

According to the FDA: “California Splendor supplied recalled product to Costco stores in Los Angeles and Hawaii, and to two San Diego business centers. Scenic Fruit supplied recalled product to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, and PCC Community Markets in specific states, and to Trader Joe’s nationwide.”

In addition, the FDA warns: “This is not an exhaustive list of products or stores. FDA is continuing to work with the firms to identify potential additional product information.”

In Association with Scenic Fruit Company LLC, ALDI Recalls Simply Nature Organic Strawberries Sold in the U.S. due to a Potential Hepatitis A Outbreak

Batavia, Ill. (March 17, 2023) – In cooperation with Scenic Fruit Company LLC, and out of an abundance of caution, ALDI is recalling Simply Nature Organic Strawberries from select stores in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin due to potential outbreak of Hepatitis A illness.

Upon notification from the supplier, ALDI immediately removed the product from its stores. The affected
product is as follows:

According to the latest information we have, there are no reported illnesses related to the recalled product. No other ALDI products are affected by this recall.

ALDI puts the safety and integrity of the products it sells first. If customers have a product affected by this recall, they are advised to discard it immediately or return it to their local store for a full refund.

RECALL: Potential Hepatitis A in Organic Tropical Fruit Blend

To Our Valued Customers:

We have been alerted by our supplier of Trader Joe’s Organic Tropical Fruit Blend (SKU# 51191) that product with BEST BY dates of 04/25/24, 05/12/24, 05/23/24, 05/30/24, and 06/07/24 may have the potential to be contaminated with Hepatitis A.

No illnesses have been reported to date, and all potentially affected product has been removed from sale and destroyed.

If you purchased any Organic Tropical Fruit Blend, please do not eat it. We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund.
