CASALUX Motion Sensing LED Light

EDITOR’S NOTE: See our update at the end of this post for info on how the light performed over a year of use.

For a time, I was having trouble with one of the hanging lights in my garage. Eventually I replaced the entire fixture, but in the short term I realized I needed some illumination to get me through the back part of the garage when it was dark. To get me through, I made use of a motion-sensing light we had that would make my path less hazardous. It did the job.

Today, I see more motion-sensing lights than I used to, especially in low-use public restrooms where it makes economic sense to have the lights go off after a while. They’re useful, not in all cases, but in some.

Aldi sells the occasional stream of light fixtures, many of them under the grocer’s house brand CASALUX. I took notice when the supermarket decided to stock a motion-sensing one.

CASALUX Motion Sensing LED Light

The CASALUX Motion Sensing LED Light (Product Code: 839143) is an Aldi Find, meaning you can only find it in stores for a limited time. Once it’s sold out, you won’t be able to get it again until it comes back, whenever that might be. Since Aldi doesn’t ship products online, if you can’t find one in stores, you’re out of luck.

At the time of this post, the light cost $4.99. While I found multipacks on Amazon that cost less per unit, on the whole this is a competitive total price. We purchased the light ourselves for review and put it through the paces for this piece.

Here are the stats from both Aldi and from the packaging:

  • Product dimensions: 7.4″ L x 1.2″ W x 0.9″ H
  • Battery operated; 4 AAA batteries included
  • Adhesive and mounting materials included
  • Light material: plastic and aluminum, silver color
  • Sensor distance: approximately 6 feet
  • Motion detector with twilight sensor
  • 120-degree field of detection
  • 30-second timer
  • Indoor use only

There is nothing in the packaging to indicate who manufactured the light, other than that it is made in China. There is no warranty or after-sales service. That’s another reason to heed that indoor use only note.

Keep in mind, too, that this is not a plug-in light. That has both pros and cons: it’s much more flexible in its placement compared to plug-in lights, but it uses batteries that will inevitably drain. Whether this is the best option for you is … well, up to you.

The package comes with the light, 4 AAA batteries, a magnetic strip with adhesive on one side, and a manual.

The manual, written in small font, gives the usual warnings as well as some basic instructions. It’s not a terribly complex device: there are no buttons or switches. When you put batteries in, it will light up for a few seconds, then go dark until it detects motion.

The magnetic strip deserves a little attention. The adhesive side can be stuck to a surface and then the light can be magnetically attached to the strip. This is useful if, say, you want to have the light hanging from the ceiling of a closet. We didn’t try out the adhesive — we don’t really have an optimal space for hanging the light — but the magnet seems strong enough to hold the light.

On top of the device is a little dome-like nub that is the motion sensor. This is what triggers the light. According to the manual, the motion sensor also detects nearby light and will not trigger the LED lights if the surrounding area isn’t dim or dark. That played out in our tests, as the light would not come on in a room with decent existing illumination.

The light, meanwhile, is trained to flick on in darkness, and in our tests it did that, too. It stays on for about 30 seconds before shutting off, although it also appears to reset that 30 second timer if there is continual motion. To get it to turn off, I had to either freeze in place or get out of the sensor’s line of sight.

As for the light output? It’s pretty good. It brightens up the space, especially smaller ones like a closet or the corner of a room.

The Verdict:

Hey, it worked as expected. That’s what you want in something like this, right? The CASALUX LED Motion Sensing Light is made to come on when it’s dark and motion happens in front of it. And it stays on while you’re moving. In addition, it doesn’t come on if it’s already light in the space this light is operating in. Oh, and it’s pretty bright, too. All in all, that seems to cover the bases.

We don’t know how long the light lasts — either in terms of battery charge or the light fixture proper — but for this price, it might be worth a look if you need some cheap, indoor, motion-sensing illumination.

UPDATE (10/9/2025) — This light worked fine for a few months. When the batteries eventually stopped working, we replaced them with new batteries, and the light output was very weak. We ultimately ended up throwing this away because it hardly lit up anymore.

  1. I have a similar looking motion light that I have under my kitchen sink area. It’s a lifesaver as it’s the darkest cupboard in the kitchen. I am going to buy another one for the other side of the cupboard so I can see even better.

    1. I waited too long only to discover one of the two “motion” activated lights only turned on after I would open/close the battery compartment. The other light does the job as advertised.

    1. I can not get my ceiling light open to put the batteries in. Looking at the set up of how it should come apart when twisted, I don’t believe that it will open. I have waited too long to take it back.
A cashier said if I had the packaging, they would look to see if there is a warranty on it. I have yet to take it back to the store. I have a feeling there is no warranty.

  2. I bought the one with C charging cord …. the on/off/auto switch doesn’t work and falls out of unit!
    HELP!! WHAT CAN I DO?

  3. I purchased the “LED WALL LIGHT with motion detector” (model NP-WWL-UPW)
…only, there doesn’t appear to be any motion detection facility on it. There is an “on” switch, which also increased/decreases the level of illumination, but the light simply stays on or off.
There is no reference to motion detection in the instructions.
