Mama Cozzi’s Mini Pepperoni Pizza Cones

When summer vacation draws near and the kids are going to be home more and need lunch and snacks, I begin stocking up on those necessary summer “supplies” at the grocery store. I fill the pantry, fridge, and freezer with a lot of healthy foods such as nuts, fresh fruit and veggies, dried fruit, unsweetened applesauce, frozen fruit for making smoothies, cheese cubes and cheese sticks, and plenty of sandwich fixings. I also make sure the deep freezer is stocked with chicken nuggets and frozen pizzas for quick and easy lunches the kids can make for themselves.

When it comes to pizza, one thing my kids and I love is Totino’s brand pizza. While I’m more of a sucker for their little crispy rectangular pizzas, my kids especially like Totino’s Pizza Rolls. They’re not good for you, but we enjoy indulging in them once in a while. Aldi sells its own versions of Totino’s pizza and pizza rolls, and we think the pizza rolls are as good as the name brand.

This spring, Aldi also stealth released some pizza snacks that remind me of Totino’s pizza rolls. But instead of being packaged as little rectangular pouches filled with cheese and pepperoni, Aldi is selling mini pizza cones that feature doughy cylinders brimming with pizza filling. Think of it as the pizza equivalent of an ice cream cone. These are also a bit like calzones.

The concept of the pizza cone has been around for a few years, and it seems to be especially popular on the internet, where recipes and instructions on how to make your own pizza cones abound. If you don’t want to make your own, though, you can get mini pizza cones at Aldi while supplies last.

Mama Cozzi's Mini Pepperoni Pizza Cones

Mama Cozzi’s Mini Pepperoni Pizza Cones cost $5.99 for an 11.3-ounce package at the time of publication. The box describes these as pepperoni, mozzarella & provolone cheese with tomato sauce in a pizza crust cone.”

These are an Aldi Find, so they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back at some point. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that are not in stock at your local store. While these are in stock, you’ll find them in the limited-buy freezer aisle.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain milk, wheat, and soy.

This is a frozen, processed pizza product, so it’s not great for you. One cone (which is considered a single serving) has a lot of calories for its small size, and the ingredients list is fairly lengthy. These are small enough that most people are going to feel like at least two or three cones make a more realistic serving. One box contains eight 1-cone servings. One serving has 120 calories, 5 grams of total fat (6% DV), 2.5 grams of saturated fat (13% DV), 340 mg of sodium (15% DV), 12 grams of total carbohydrates (4% DV), and not enough added sugars to register on the nutrition information panel.

The back of the box has directions for heating these in a conventional oven or in an air fryer. Regardless of what cooking method you use, these are best when cooked from frozen.

To bake in the oven, preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Remove cones from packaging. Place them sideways on a baking sheet. Bake for 11-13 minutes or until sizzling. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before enjoying.

To air fry, preheat the air fryer to 300 degrees. Remove cones from packaging. Place cones sideways in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 10-12 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through cooking time. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before enjoying.

The box also recommends pairing with your favorite dipping sauce. I think you could serve these with pizza sauce, marinara sauce, ranch dressing, cheese dip, or whatever appeals to your taste buds.

After air frying.

I chose to heat these in my Aldi air fryer. The cones don’t really get dark or golden brown in color, so keep that in mind when cooking these so you don’t overcook them in hopes that they’ll eventually darken. I initially cooked about half of the box for 10 minutes in my air fryer, and the crust was almost too crispy. I might try cooking the rest of the box for only 8 or 9 minutes.

The cones are solid and not likely to leak or ooze filling like pizza rolls do. The filling tastes fairly salty and is a soft, kind of mushy mixture of finely diced pepperoni, pizza sauce, and cheese. The cheese in the filling is not really stringy or gooey, and the filling seems to consist more of sauce and small bits of meat than cheese.

My family liked these, although they’re so unhealthy I only made one per person when we sampled these, and I served other things such as fresh fruit and nuts to help balance out the processed, high-fat, high-sodium pizza cones.

These will not be something I buy every time I see them in stores, but they get points for being different. Now that I know what pizza cones are, I might even try making them homemade at some point, which would make them less unhealthy.

The Verdict:

Mama Cozzi’s Mini Pepperoni Pizza Cones are like a cross between a calzone and a Totino’s Pizza Roll. They feature a sturdy dough cone filled with diced pepperoni, pizza sauce, and cheese. They’re totally not good for you, but if you’re a pizza fan, you might like these.
