Southern Grove Neapolitan Trail Mix + S’mores Trail Mix

Trail mix doesn’t last long in my house. My husband loves it as an after-work or after-dinner snack or as fuel during camping trips. My kids eat it for snacks or packed in lunches. I often find myself picking up a bag of mixed nuts, raisins, and M & M’s during my regular Aldi shopping trips to make sure we always have some around. Trail mix has just the right mix of salty and sweet, with some protein to help fill you up, and even a little fiber.

Another cool thing about trail mix is that you can find flavor variations to suit every taste, whether you like sweet, salty, spicy, fruity, carby, or chocolaty. If sweet is your thing, Aldi recently rolled out some fun summer trail mixes that incorporate the flavors of popular seasonal treats: either s’mores or Neapolitan ice cream. These are more dessert than health food, but hey, they do contain some good-for-you ingredients such as peanuts, cashews, and almonds.

Southern Grove Neapolitan Trail Mix and Southern Grove S'mores Trail Mix

Southern Grove Neapolitan Trail Mix and Southern Grove S’mores Trail Mix each cost $4.89 for a 9-10-ounce bag at the time of publication. They’re Aldi Finds, which means they’re only in stores for a short time. Aldi does not offer online ordering once these sell out at your local store.

These both contain a lot of either chocolate or white chocolate or other sugary pieces, although the Neapolitan Trail Mix has less added sugar than I expected at 4 grams per serving, which almost seems a little too good to believe. The S’mores Trail Mix contains more added sugar, at 12 grams per serving. You could easily dilute the sugar content in these mixes by adding extra peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, or almonds.

Because these contain candy pieces, their ingredients lists are lengthy and contain some processed items, so these are not treats to indulge in often.

The bag for the Neapolitan Trail Mix contains a “blend of strawberry flavored confectionary cones, almonds, semi-sweet chocolate chips, cashews, white chocolate chips and dried sweetened strawberries.”

This is a very sweet trail mix. It has a lot of chocolate chips and white chocolate chips, and I almost would prefer slightly fewer of those. It also contains strawberry-flavored “confectionary cones” that are like chocolate chips but shaped like little strawberry ice cream cones. These are good, but they also add to the overall abundance of chocolate/white chocolate, making this mix really sweet. This has several large chunks of dried sweetened strawberries that are chewy and almost gummy candy-like, and I would buy these strawberries on their own if they were sold that way. There is also a decent amount of cashews and almonds in this mix.

Regarding allergens, the Neapolitan Trail Mix contains almonds, cashews, milk, and soy. It may also contain other tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, egg, and sesame.

This is a product of the U.S., Brazil, Vietnam, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, and China.

One 9-ounce bag contains about eight 1/4-cup servings. One serving has 150 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 4.5 grams of saturated fat (23% DV), 60 mg of sodium (3% DV), 16 grams of total carbohydrates (6% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 13 grams of total sugars, 4 grams of added sugars (8% DV), and 2 grams of protein.

The bag for the S’mores Trail Mix contains a “blend of white chocolate marshmallows, semi-sweet chocolate chunks, graham cookies, marshmallow truffles & peanuts.”

This is a really tasty trail mix, and you can get all the components of a traditional s’more in one bite. It is my favorite of the two trail mixes in this summer trail mix lineup. It contains marshmallow-like bites covered in white chocolate, chocolate squares, graham cracker squares, chocolates with a marshmallow-like filling, and peanuts. It also tends to be very sweet, especially the white chocolate marshmallows and the marshmallow chocolate truffles.

If you’re looking out for allergens, the S’mores Trail Mix contains peanuts, wheat, milk, and soy. It may also contain tree nuts, egg, and sesame.

This is a product of the U.S.

One 10-ounce bag contains about 10 1/4-cup servings. One serving has 150 calories, 8 grams of total fat (10% DV), 4.5 grams of saturated fat (23% DV), 65 mg of sodium (3% DV), 18 grams of total carbohydrates (7% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 13 grams of total sugars, 12 grams of added sugars (24% DV), and 2 grams of protein.

The Verdict:

Southern Grove Neapolitan Trail Mix and Southern Grove S’mores Trail Mix are specialty summer-themed trail mixes at Aldi. The Neapolitan mix contains strawberry-flavored “ice cream cones” that are like white chocolate, along with almonds, semi-sweet chocolate chips, cashews, white chocolate chips, and dried sweetened strawberries. The S’mores mix contains white chocolate-covered marshmallows, semi-sweet chocolate chunks, graham cookies, marshmallow chocolate truffles, and peanuts. Both are solid mixes, although these are definitely desserts and not health food trail mixes. We lean toward the S’mores mix being our favorite.
