Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Chip Dippers

One of my favorite summer lunches or snacks when I was a kid was guacamole dip with Fritos corn chips. My mom would buy envelopes of guacamole mix from the grocery store, along with a couple of avocados, and mix it all together. That smooth, creamy, savory guacamole was the perfect complement to crispy corn chips.
I still love guacamole, and I typically make it from scratch these days when I want a dip to serve alongside a nacho or taco meal. I also still love Fritos chips, which are great not only with guac but are also delicious with other dips such as cowboy caviar or sprinkled over a bowl of chili.
When it comes to corn chips, Fritos tend to rule. However, Trader Joe’s, which is a cousin to Aldi, sells its own version of Fritos Scoops — those larger corn chips that are perfect for scooping up dip. The TJ’s version is organic and features a short, simple ingredients list.
The package for Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Chip Dippers states these are “ideal dipping equipment. They’re sturdy, so they’ll hold up to even the heartiest dips, spreads and salsa. They virtually scream to be paired with guacamole.” TJ’s also mentions they’re “made with nothing but organic corn, organic oil and sea salt.”
Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Chip Dippers cost $2.49 for a 9.75-ounce bag. That’s about 26 cents per ounce.
For comparison, a 9.25-ounce bag of Fritos Scoops cost about 48 cents per ounce at Walmart at the time of writing. A larger 15.5-ounce family size bag of Fritos Scoops is about 38 cents per ounce at Walmart at the time of writing. That makes the TJ’s corn chip dippers the better deal.
These are kosher certified and are gluten free. They are certified USDA organic and are certified organic by Quality Assurance International.

Ingredients are organic ground yellow corn, organic vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: organic sunflower, organic safflower, or organic canola oil), and sea salt.
Name-brand Fritos Scoops list corn, corn oil, and salt as the only ingredients. So the ingredients lists are fairly similar, although Trader Joe’s uses all organic ingredients. The Trader Joe’s chips and Fritos Scoops have the same number of calories for a 28-gram serving, while the Trader Joe’s chips have slightly less sodium than Fritos Scoops.

One bag has about 10 servings. One 1-ounce serving (about eight chips) has 160 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 1 gram of saturated fat (5% DV), 125 mg of sodium (5% DV), 16 grams of total carbohydrates (6% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), no sugars, and 2 grams of protein.
We tried these with Trader Joe’s Cowboy Caviar, and they are as good as Fritos. They’re crispy, crunchy, have a satisfying flavor with the right amount of saltiness, and they hold up well to hearty dips. Given the fact that they’re cheaper than name-brand Fritos Scoops, I would definitely buy these again when I need corn chip dipper chips.

The Verdict:
Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Chip Dippers are made with corn, oil, and salt. They’re comparable to name-brand Fritos Scoops, and they’re actually cheaper than the Fritos brand. They’re great with dips like guacamole or cowboy caviar, or you can enjoy them on their own.

We’ve been buying these for a long time. They’re our favorite!
