Fremont Fish Market British Beer-Battered Haddock Fish and Chips

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom. As an American with admittedly American food tastes, I didn’t always take to English or Scottish food, something my Scottish ancestors might have strong opinions about. Nevertheless, I tried everything I could at least once. (Even haggis.)
One thing I did really like in the UK? Fish and chips. And this is saying something, given that I’m not much of a fan of breaded fish. But I found the brilliantly battered fish and the crispy chips were outstanding, a rare but notable example of a food I liked better there than what I’d get here in the States.
For that reason, whenever I see the words fish and chips I take notice, especially when those fish and chips indicate a connection to foods across the pond. When a certain German grocery store stocked a take on the duo, I decided to try it out.
This particular entree is called Fremont Fish Market British Beer-Battered Haddock Fish and Chips as of 2025 and 2026. It used to be called Fremont Fish Market Scottish Beer-Battered Haddock Fish and Chips back when we first reviewed it in 2022. The name is different, but it’s essentially the same product with identical nutrition information and nearly identical ingredients lists.
This is currently an Aldi Find. That means it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store should get one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone until whenever Aldi decides to bring it back.
Previously, this appeared to be a Seasonal Item that Aldi stocked throughout the winter months, but now it only shows up in stores occasionally. This haddock fish and chips is sold in a mixed case alongside cod fish and chips.
We buy Aldi products using our own funds, and I paid $3.49 for a 14-ounce box in 2025. That’s down from when we paid $4.99 for a 14-ounce box in 2022. As of 2026, it’s up to $5.99 for 14 ounces.
If you’re wondering about authenticity, the package says it is a product of the United Kingdom. The fish is listed as wild caught in FAO 27, specifically the area including the northwest coast of Scotland and north Ireland as well as the west of Scotland.
Fair warning: this dish is not healthy for you. At all. One serving — which the box says is, well, the entire box — will set you back some 800 calories, with 41% of your recommended daily fat (32g) and 38% of your recommended daily sodium (880mg).
The ingredients lists for both the fish and chips are long and processed. On the allergen front, the package contains fish (haddock), milk, wheat, and barley.
There is enough food here that you could potentially share with someone else, helping to reduce the nutritional impact.
The box provides just one method of cooking, which is by oven. The instructions warn that the box should be kept frozen until you’re ready to prepare.
To bake, you first preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, place the frozen fillet and chips on a baking sheet on the middle shelf of a preheated oven for 25 minutes, turning halfway through cooking time. Let it all stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.
Alternatively, you could cook this in the air fryer, which some readers have tried, and so did we a couple of years ago. We cooked it for 400 degrees for 19 minutes, flipping everything halfway through. Your mileage may vary.
Most recently, though, we baked this in our oven.
Overall, this is a decent meal and the fish has plenty of crispy breading, but we didn’t think the fish was as flavorful as some other beer-battered fish we’ve eaten. It’s still good, though, and we like it enough that we often buy it when Aldi has it in stock.
The Verdict:
Fremont Fish Market British Beer-Battered Haddock Fish and Chips are a decent take on the pair. Boasting authentic ingredients from the United Kingdom, it’s still not as good as a restaurant, but it’s decent anyway. Just know that the box has more than its share of calories, fat, and sodium.
Fremont Beer-battered Haddock is not the same as it was last season. The fish size is half the size as picture on the box and the fish is now heavenly battered and I will not purchase again this season.

I LOVED when Aldi’s sold these fish fry dinners-as Haddock can’t be found here in VA. They finally brought them back in January, but the fish is 1/2 the size and price has come up about $3 per box…sad to say..so I don’t buy it much anymore. Still tastes good-but not worth the small portion of fish. Make the fish back to normal size and cut down the fries instead.
Wendy – another head’s up. This week (1/26-2/1) Martin’s supermarkets (& maybe Giant as well since they’re owned by the same company) have Haddock on sale for $9.99/#.
Wendy – re: no Haddock in VA. I buy fresh or frozen/thawed Haddock all the time at our local Martin’s here in Culpeper frequently. It shows up at the seafood counter at least every two months or so. Also makes appearances at Harris Teeter & other markets with seafood counters. Keep your eyes open for it.

I tried these Fremont fish and chips today and to be honest they were as good or even better than some of the chain restaurants I have reviewed
I purchased this in March 2026 and prepared it within 1 week. Thoroughly disappointed in the quality and taste. I bought it after reading the package and thought i would give it a try. Don’t waste your money.
