Appetitos Breaded Mushroom Bites

EDITOR’S NOTE: This review is from late 2024. Aldi is selling identical breaded mushrooms the week of November 19th, 2025, for $4.99 for 14 ounces, the same price as in 2024. 

Breaded fried mushrooms are one of my favorite appetizers to order at restaurants. They’re not as common as other appetizers such as breaded cheese sticks, so when I see them on a restaurant menu, I often order them. There is something about that combination of savory, juicy, tender mushroom and crispy outer breading that is delicious, especially when dipped in ranch dressing.

To the best of my knowledge, I’ve never seen Aldi sell breaded mushrooms … until 2024. The grocer is selling breaded mushroom bites as a limited-time special in the freezer aisle. The package describes these as “whole mushrooms in a crispy breaded coating.”

Appetitos Breaded Mushroom Bites are an Aldi Find, which means they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back later. Aldi does not offer online ordering if a product is not in stock at your local store.

These are sold under the Appetitos brand, which is not a company. It’s just the name Aldi puts on various frozen appetizers it sells, which it sources from different suppliers.

We bought this ourselves for review. I paid $4.99 for a 14-ounce package at my local store in 2024. That’s around 36 cents per ounce. When Aldi sold them again in 2025, they were the same price.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain egg, milk, soy, and wheat.

There are about five 4-piece servings per box. One serving has 160 calories, 6 grams of total fat (8% DV), 1 gram of saturated fat (5% DV), 190 mg of sodium (8% DV), 22 grams of total carbohydrates (8% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 1 gram of total sugars, no added sugars, and 4 grams of protein.

The box has instructions for deep frying, baking in a conventional oven, or air frying these.

To deep fry, cook at 350 degrees for 3-3.5 minutes. Allow to sit for 1-2 minutes before serving.

To bake in a conventional oven, preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Arrange bites in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 14-16 minutes. Flip halfway through baking.

To air fry, preheat the air fryer to 370 degrees. Load the basket with a single layer of frozen mushrooms. Cook for 3 minutes. Shake the basket and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Let stand for 1-2 minutes before serving.

I made these in our air fryer. I cooked them for one extra minute to crisp them up just a little more.

My family — even those of us who love mushrooms — thought these were bland. The breading doesn’t have much flavor and certainly doesn’t taste like breaded fried mushrooms from any restaurant. Looking more closely at the ingredients list, we noticed the breading is mostly various flours and a bit of salt, with no other notable seasonings.

I thought some of the mushrooms seemed a bit on the tough or chewy side, while other relatives said their mushrooms were mushy.

We served these with ranch for dipping, but they were pretty forgettable.

The Verdict:

Appetitos Breaded Mushroom Bites feature whole mushrooms in a crispy bread coating. We hoped these would be at least a little similar to the breaded mushrooms we like to order at restaurants. However, we found these to be lacking in flavor, and the texture of the mushrooms didn’t always seem quite right.
