Aldi to Add 13,000 New Workers, Raise National Average Starting Wages

Aldi has been nothing if not ambitious in its growth plan. Last year, the supermarket acquired Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in a move that sent earthquakes across the grocery industry. Then, earlier this year, Aldi unveiled a new plan to add 800 new stores by 2028. All of this comes on the heels of Aldi adding more than 1,000 new stores over the last decade.

With all this growth, Aldi also has to manage growing pains, including hiring more workers to meet its ever-growing footprint. It’s probably no surprise, then, that, earlier this month, Aldi announced a new round of initiatives related to its workforce.

For starters, Aldi is adding some 13,000 jobs ahead of the upcoming holiday season. This is on top of the 49,000 workers the grocer already employs, which represents more than a 25% increase in staffing. The Aldi press release notes that these additional positions include in-store roles, warehouse staff, and drivers.

In addition, Aldi is raising its starting wages across the board. The supermarket will now offer national average starting wages for store positions at $18 an hour, while warehouse positions will average a starting wage of $23 an hour. Aldi adds that these wages will be “based on market and position.”

The grocer also is touting its benefits package. Employees working more than 30 hours a week, for instance, have access to health insurance and paid time off. Aldi also notes that, in 2023, it added perks including “flexible scheduling and 100% paid parental and caregiver leave.” The press release adds that workers have opportunities for advancement, boasting that “70% of assistant store managers and over 30% of store managers started as store associates” within the grocer.
