Appleton Farms Premium Pork Sausage

We like to rave about Aldi breakfast foods around here. From our site’s earliest days, we’ve talked about the many ways Aldi wins at the first meal of the day, be it cold or hot foods. We’re especially big fans of Aldi sausage, which comes in both precooked and uncooked varieties.

There are times when we need sausage for individual servings, which makes the links and patties an ideal option. Other times, though, we need a larger quantity of sausage for a larger dish, and that’s when the famed sausage roll comes into play.

Appleton Farms Premium Pork Sausage is a Regular Buy, which means you can find it in stores year-round. It comes in a roll much like the ones you see at other grocers, with metal clips holding the plastic wrapper together at both ends.

At the time of this post, the sausage comes in a 16-ounce (1 pound) roll and costs $2.45.

If you want to cook the sausage in patties for individual consumption, the package does offer a pan fry method. You slice the sausage into patties of desired thickness, then place them in a cold skillet with two tablespoons of water. Covering the skillet, you simmer until the water evaporates, then remove the cover and cook the sausages until they reach an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees.

For the sake of convenience, we prefer using more pre-made patties or links if we’re making individual portions. Instead, we prefer to use this sausage as part of larger recipes, including breakfast burritos and — our personal favorite, biscuits and gravy.

In all cases — be it individual servings or recipes — we find this Aldi sausage to be perfect for the job. It’s got flavor but isn’t overly spicy, and it cooks up easily.

Nutritionally, it’s got more than its share of fat and sodium. Each 2-ounce serving has 190 calories, 16 grams of fat (25% of the recommended daily value), 5 grams of saturated fat (26%), and 420 milligrams of sodium (18%). Ingredients in addition to sausage include water, salt, vinegar, flavorings, and dextrose. To be fair, none of this is much different than most sausage rolls we’ve seen at other grocers.

The Verdict:

As sausage rolls go, this is one of our go-to options. It tastes good, with a seasoned flavor and not too much spice, and it pairs well with things like biscuits and gravy or any other recipe where seasoned pork sausage is required. It also can be cut into patties and cooked if you prefer that.

  1. Thank you for posting images of the nutrition information. However , my family and I are label ingredient readers and do not purchase items with added sugars, grain seed oils, and artificial flavors etc. Having photo images of the ingredients list should be of great value to al large number of shoppers that seek out healthier processed food items….. Please consider adding photo images of the products ingredient list…. Thank you in advance.

  2. This sausage was a blessing in a way! My mother’s dressing for Thanksgiving dinner had been made with Esskay (mid-Atlantic local company) since she was a child. Then Esskay got bought, the sausage discontinued. Many Marylander’s were extremely upset when their products disappeared. I began trying out as many different labels of bulk sausage as I could find and the Aldi brand was the winner! The main reason was, as you state, the seasonings are not overwhelming. I’ve become such a fan I buy it for other dishes now too.
