Benton’s Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Aldi does sweets pretty well. Whether it’s chocolate covered pretzels or premium ice cream, the discount grocer has plenty of sugar to destroy your diet. And we know you love them, too — Aldi’s imitation Girl Scout cookies are one of our more popular posts.

While chocolate-covered pretzels and loaded ice cream are great, sometimes a person just wants a regular chocolate chip cookie. And Aldi has that, too.

Benton's Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Benton’s Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies are a Regular Buy. We most commonly find them in the first aisle of the store, near many of the other cookies and crackers. Aldi also sells traditional (as in non-chewy) chocolate chip cookies, but we’re a little partial to the chewy ones, so we decided to take those for a spin.

The cookies come in a 13 ounce package of cookies “full of real chocolate chips.” They appear, to us, to be meant to be Aldi’s imitation of Nabisco’s Chewy Chips Ahoy!, right down to the vaguely similar red packaging. That, though, is in itself a bit of a difference, as the Chips Ahoy wrapper comes with a nifty pull tab that can be used to open and reseal the cookies for freshness. Benton’s does not, meaning that you’ll have to clip them or at least fold the packaging carefully to keep the cookies from going stale.

Beyond that, though, the Benton’s are pretty good imitations. The cookies are indeed soft, the dough is good, and there is enough chocolate in the cookies to be respectable. We never had a chance to really test the aforementioned staleness issue with packaging because the cookies didn’t last long enough. That should tell you what we thought of them.

Nutritionally, these cookies are an excellent source of fat and sugar … as in, they’re not very good for you. But they’re cookies, so you already knew that.

The Verdict:

As far as your non-baked, store-bought, open-and-eat-them cookies go, these work just fine. They are a legitimate imitation of a Chewy Chips Ahoy!, and an easy recommendation if you need sweets and don’t have the time or ability to fix them up yourself. And they’re cheap, because they’re Aldi.

I was very sorry that Aldi dropped the Bentons Old Fashioned Homestyle cookies. They and the other flavors of Peanut Butter and Oatmeal were delicious. I was told by an employee they were discontinuing them and I can’t understand why. Hopefully they will come back in the future.
