Ezekiel 4:9 Flourless Sesame Sprouted Grain Bread (Trader Joe’s)

My husband and I recently went on a search for healthier breads. We landed a while back on some good options at Aldi, including their Graintastic and Seedtastic breads and their Knock Your Sprouts Off bread. These look to be dupes of popular name-brands such as Dave’s Killer Bread and Ezekiel 4:9 bread by Food for Life. These loaves are made with more whole grains and tend to be lower in carbs and higher in fiber than your typical loaf of bread.

While we eat those healthier Aldi breads on a regular basis, we hadn’t actually tried any of their name-brand counterparts yet. While shopping at Trader Joe’s, which is a cousin to Aldi, I spotted some Ezekiel 4:9 bread by Food for Life and picked up a loaf.

Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Bread

Ezekiel 4:9 Flourless Sesame Sprouted Grain Bread cost $5.49 for a 24-ounce loaf at Trader Joe’s in 2026. That comes out to about 23 cents per ounce. We buy products for review using our own funds.

Ezekiel bread, as it’s often called, is not exclusive to Trader Joe’s. I can find it at other retailers in my area, including Target, Walmart, and large regional grocery chains. I find it to be a pretty good deal cost-wise at Trader Joe’s, though. For instance, this same 24-ounce loaf cost $7.59 at Target at the time of writing, which is more than $2 higher than the Trader Joe’s price.

Ezekiel bread is going to cost more than any bread you get at Aldi, though. At the time of writing, thin-sliced Graintastic bread cost $3.85 for a 20.4-ounce loaf at my local Aldi, or about 19 cents per ounce.

This bread is USDA Organic and certified organic by Quality Assurance International. It’s also kosher, vegan, and non-GMO. This is also non-glyphosate certified.

Because it’s a natural product with no preservatives, the package recommends storing the bread in the refrigerator for best results. For longer storage, you can freeze the bread. We store most of our bread, of any type, in the freezer and thaw slices as needed, since we don’t always eat a loaf before it molds.

This bread is inspired by a verse in the Bible. Ezekiel 4:9 states, “Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it …”

(If you want context on the larger passage of Scripture this verse is pulled from, which deals with God instructing the prophet Ezekiel to warn Israel about Jerusalem coming under siege by the Babylonians, check out this blog post here. Some spoilers: this was bread eaten during a famine or siege, and God originally told Ezekiel to bake it over human excrement. Thankfully, they left that part off the bread wrapper.)

How it Tastes:

I’ll be honest: my family and I don’t think this is the tastiest bread. It’s fine, if a little bland. From a pure taste perspective, everyone said they prefer Aldi Graintastic bread or Knock Your Sprouts Off bread.

From a health perspective, though, this bread has a lot going for it, so it’s hard to knock it. With plenty of whole grains and fiber, and with no added sugars, it’s a good option for sandwiches, toast, and whatever else you need bread for. If you’re looking for bread that’s healthier, this is a natural choice.

The Verdict:

Ezekiel 4:9 Flourless Sesame Sprouted Grain Bread features sprouted whole grains and no traditional flour, for a low-carb, low-glycemic, high-fiber loaf. It’s one of the healthiest breads we’ve seen. While we think there are tastier breads out there, this one tastes decent, and you can’t beat the health benefits.
