Trader Joe’s Trader Ming’s Shiitake Mushroom Chicken
Chinese takeout is a favorite among various members in my family. There’s a local restaurant near our house that we love, but we’re also amenable to certain frozen entrees from the grocery store.
During a recent visit to Trader Joe’s, which is a cousin to Aldi, I found a chicken dish that features mushrooms. My husband is a big fan of mushrooms, so I picked it up to try at home.
The package says this is “a savory dish of marinated chicken, shiitake mushrooms, edamame and green beans in ginger soy sauce.” This is a bit different than a lot of other takeout-style entrees because the chicken is not breaded. That might be a positive if you’re looking to eat a little healthier.
Trader Ming’s Shiitake Mushroom Chicken cost $5.99 for a 1-pound, 6-ounce package at our local TJ’s during the summer of 2025. That’s around 27 cents per ounce. One package contains about four 1-cup servings, which comes out to about $1.50 per serving. We bought this with our own funds.
If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains eggs, soy, and wheat.
A 1-cup serving has 180 calories (70 calories from fat), 8 grams of total fat (12% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (9% DV), 480 mg of sodium (20% DV), 9 grams of total carbohydrates (3% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 3 grams of sugars, and 20 grams of protein.

Unlike a lot of other frozen Asian takeout meals, this needs to be thawed before preparing it. To defrost, place the unopened sauce packet in a bowl with warm water to thaw. Place the chicken in a microwave-safe dish and cover with plastic. Heat the chicken and unopened vegetable pouch in the microwave for 2-3 minutes.
After thawing, you heat it on the stovetop. Use a large non-stick frying pan or wok to heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil over medium heat. Add sauce and heat until bubbling. Add defrosted chicken and vegetables. Stir fry until large chicken pieces and mushrooms are heated through, about 4-5 minutes. Serve right away.
I defrosted this in the refrigerator before heating it on the stovetop. I served it alongside some homemade fried rice and some chicken karaage, also from TJ’s.
There is plenty of chicken, with lots of edamame and small pieces of cut green beans. There is a decent amount of mushrooms, but not tons. The ginger soy sauce has mostly notes of soy sauce and not a lot of ginger, which was fine with us, and it nicely complements the chicken, veggies, and mushrooms.
The Verdict:
Trader Ming’s Shiitake Mushroom Chicken features marinated chicken, mushrooms, edamame, and green beans in a ginger soy sauce. We like how you can get both protein and veggies in this dish, and it tastes good. If you’re a fan of mushrooms, this is worth a try.
