Vanilla ice cream is one of my favorite desserts. I don’t think I’ve ever found an ice cream sandwich that I didn’t like, either. So when I saw that Trader Joe’s — which is a cousin to Aldi — was selling Oat Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Sandwiches, I decided to get them to try. These ice cream sandwiches have oat milk-based ice cream instead of dairy-based ice cream, making them vegan-friendly and good for people who are lactose intolerant.

These cost $3.69 for a 14.8-ounce box containing six sandwiches at the time of purchase. That comes out to about 62 cents per sandwich or about 25 cents per ounce. Each of the ice cream sandwiches is relatively small, and one serving is actually two sandwiches. This might be helpful if you are trying to limit sweets and want to eat only one sandwich.

For comparison, So Delicious Dairy Free Sandwiches made with coconut milk cost $5.99 for an 18.4-ounce box of eight sandwiches at Target at the time of writing. That comes out to about 33 cents per ounce or 75 cents per sandwich. So you might get a slightly better deal at Trader Joe’s if you’re looking for vegan frozen dessert sandwiches.

The box for the Trader Joe’s sandwiches states:

These sandwiches are a vegan version of a classic , nostalgic treat that are free of dairy but full of deliciousness. Two chocolatey wafer cookies sandwich a creamy, vanilla flavored oat frozen dessert — one bite and you’d never guess that these weren’t made with real cream!

One tiny sandwich.

These oat sandwiches taste similar to dairy ice cream sandwiches I’ve had, although dairy-based ice cream is creamier and smoother compared to these. I didn’t mind the texture much, and I still enjoyed these sandwiches. I think these make a good dairy-free dessert, although like I said earlier, the bars are a little small.

The Verdict:

I liked these bars and would buy them again. They’re a good option if you need a dairy-free dessert, and they taste just about the same as dairy ice cream. I don’t have any complaints, except for the minor issue of the sandwiches being smaller. All in all, I would recommend these as a good vegan-friendly ice cream sandwich.
