Belmont Strawberry Piñata Cake

Last Updated:

There are certain things that an average person sees at Aldi, says, “that’s clever,” and then moves on to get the milk and eggs. I would imagine that, for many people, Aldi’s take on a strawberry piñata cake fits that category. It was true for our family; we passed it by for weeks with little smiles and comments about how interesting it was.

We would never have purchased it, had 1) our daughter not prodded us incessantly about it and 2) Aldi not reduced the price in an attempt to clear it out. But we did, and here’s what we got:

Belmont Strawberry Pinata Cake

The Belmont Strawberry Piñata Cake is, according to the packaging, “white cake layered with mousse and strawberry sauce, filled with confetti candy and topped with a frosted shell.” It boasts having no artificial flavors and no high fructose corn syrup. (It does have plenty of sugar, though — 20 grams per serving.)

The cake comes frozen. The instructions tell you to let it thaw at room temperature for four hours before serving, and also warns you that it cannot be refrozen. It must be refrigerated when not out, and it has to be eaten in 24 hours. My guess is that most people buying this cake will do so for a special occasion, so these restrictions may not matter too much.

When you cut it open, the layers come out pretty smoothly. The piñata pieces, little candies, sort of settle around the center of the cake, where you can spoon them onto plates as desired. The cake tastes good, especially if you like strawberry. The cake isn’t large, though, so if you need more than eight modestly sized portions you might want to either get more than one, or look somewhere else.

The Verdict:

It’s not terribly large, but if you’re looking for something different and a little festive, you can get eight rather entertaining servings out of this tasty strawberry dessert.
