It’s no secret that I love a good cup of tea. I have an entire shelf dedicated to tea in my pantry, plus half a dozen glass canisters filled with tea bags on my kitchen counter. A cup of hot tea is my favorite way to start the day. I also love to sit down with a cup of tea while I work, or sometimes I enjoy a mug of hot herbal tea in the evenings after dinner.

Several Aldi teas are part of my tea collection, including their basic black tea and their English Breakfast tea. The discount grocer also regularly rolls out different limited-time tea flavors that I enjoy trying.

When the Christmas season approaches, Aldi often sells a candy cane tea and a cinnamon spice tea. These holiday flavors seem to be popular because we get quite a few readers asking about the tea’s availability. Aldi also used to sell chai with their other holiday teas, but recently Aldi made the chai a Regular Buy that is available year round. That makes sense because chai is not a tea I associate with Christmas.

This year, it looks like Aldi has come up with a new holiday tea flavor in place of the chai. I found this sugar cookie flavored tea this week.

Benner Tea Co. Sugar Cookie Flavored White Tea Blend is an Aldi Find, so it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store receives one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone unless Aldi decides to bring it back next holiday season. Aldi does not offer online ordering for this tea if it’s sold out at your local store.

Benner Tea Co. Sugar Cookie Flavored White Tea Blend cost $2.39 for a 1.41-ounce box containing 20 individually wrapped tea bags. That comes out to about 12 cents per tea bag.

Name-brand Celestial Seasonings sells an herbal sugar cookie tea blend that cost $2.88 at Walmart at the time of publication for a 1.3-ounce box containing 18 tea bags. That’s about 16 cents per tea bag. So the Aldi tea is a little cheaper, but the Aldi tea does contain some caffeine while the Celestial seasonings version does not, so which tea you prefer is really a matter of personal choice.

Ingredients in the Aldi tea are white tea, chamomile, licorice, cinnamon, dried honey, and natural flavor.

White tea does contain a small amount of caffeine — between 6 and 55 mg per cup — with the exact amount dependent upon factors such as the type of white tea and the processing and harvesting techniques used, the temperature at which the tea is steeped, and the length of time the tea is allowed to steep, with longer steeping times resulting in more caffeine content.

White tea does have less caffeine than green tea, which generally has 30-70 mg per cup. For comparison, black tea contains 47-90 mg per cup, while coffee has 96 mg per cup, according to Healthline.

The box gives directions for brewing hot or iced tea. For hot tea, bring fresh cold water to a rolling boil. Pour 8 ounces of water over one tea bag. Steep for 3-5 minutes. Remove the tea bag and serve with sweetener if desired. For iced tea, bring fresh cold water to a rolling boil. Pour 4 cups of water over 3 to 5 tea bags and steep for 3-5 minutes. Remove tea bags and pour over ice-filled glasses. (You can toss your used tea bags in your compost bin.)

This tea has a mild, light flavor, which is typical for a white tea. The licorice in it gives it a nice bit of sweetness so I don’t feel like I need to add honey or other sweetener, and it does contain some dried honey that probably sweetens it as well.

This is a decent tea overall. I feel like it tastes as advertised and captures the essence of what a sugar cookie tastes like. It’s a nice option if you want a tea that is only lightly caffeinated, and I like the fact that it doesn’t need sweetener added.

The Verdict:

Benner Tea Co. Sugar Cookie Flavored White Tea Blend features white tea, chamomile, licorice, cinnamon, dried honey, and natural flavor. It’s lightly sweet and reminiscent of a sugar cookie. It does contain a small amount of caffeine, but it’s less caffeine than a cup of green tea, black tea, or coffee.

  1. Rachael, Thank you for this review. Do you know if I can find nutritional information for this tea? I’m specifically wondering if there are any sugar grams in the nutritional information since it contains licorice and dried honey.

    • The tea box does not have that information, but any calories or sugar are probably very minimal, and I think if it had significant calories or sugar it would be required to be printed on the box. Also keep in mind that the licorice in this tea is an herb and not like candy licorice. Unless you’re adding milk, sugar, or honey to this tea, my guess is that it’s got only a couple of calories per serving. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/tea-calories#other-teas
