Open Thread: Belavi Sun Shade Sail

Sun protection gets talked about a lot these days. Skin cancer is common, and the American Academy of Dermatology Association estimates one in five people will develop skin cancer during their lives. I’ve seen those statistics play out among some of my own family and friends, several of whom have had suspicious or cancerous spots removed. For this reason, we take our sun protection seriously. My family uses sunscreen regularly when we’re outdoors, and I apply a facial sunscreen each morning as part of my routine. We also wear hats, sunglasses, and rash guards at the pool or beach, and we bring along a portable sun shelter when we go to the beach.

For more protection, if you have a backyard pool, patio, or deck space that gets direct sun, you can put up large umbrellas to offer some shade. Another option I’ve seen in recent years is to install a sun shade sail. It’s a large piece of fabric that is stretched tight over an outdoor space to provide relief from the sun’s direct rays. These shade sails aren’t just useful for patios. I’ve also seen people install them over some children’s swing sets or other play equipment.

Aldi sometimes sells a couple of types of sun shade sails. Here’s a closer look at the sails Aldi advertised most recently.

What We Know:

Belavi Sun Shade Sail
Rectangle sun shade sail in beige.

The Belavi Sun Shade Sail (Product Code: 830873) is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone until next year, if Aldi decides to bring it back. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that are not currently in stock at your local store.

This is scheduled to arrive in stores June 5th, 2024.

The Belavi Sun Shade Sail cost $14.99 at the time of publication. That’s less than other shade sails I found on Amazon at the time of publication, although the Aldi shade sails are slightly smaller than many of the other sails I found on Amazon.

Here’s more information on the sail, according to Aldi:

  • Available in Charcoal or Beige colors in Rectangle and Triangle shapes
  • Rectangle Dimensions: 9.8 x 6.5 feet; Triangle Dimensions: 13.6 x 13.6 x 13.6 feet
  • Includes hanging hardware
  • Adds sun protection and privacy for gardens and patios
  • Made of durable and easy to clean polyester fabric
  • Promises fast and easy installation

Previous sun shade sails Aldi has sold in years past came with a three-year warranty serviced by Protel, a common Aldi warranty provider. However, Aldi has not yet published information about whether the 2024 sun shade sail has a warranty.

This is sold under the Belavi brand. There is no company called Belavi. That’s just the name Aldi puts on many of its outdoor products to give them a uniform look, and those products may be sourced from a variety of suppliers.

What We Don’t Know:

We haven’t purchased this sun shade sail, so we don’t know how easily it installs, how well it works, or how durable it is. We write open threads to provide readers with a space to discuss Aldi products.

  1. Just today we purchased a Belavi Sun Shade Sail from Aldi. I believe it will be exactly what we need, however, the springs were not included in the package as it was stated they were enclosed.

  2. I bought 2 of the triangle shades, put them over our pool – loved them for about two weeks until one of the seams/ripped and came undone where the metal D ring is to secure it, now we cant use it. Disappointed in the quality.

  3. I bought two- the rectangle and the triangle one. Although they look great, we are just now experiencing our first rain after the installation and there are two pockets of collected water that are causing it to sag instead of rolling off. I am deeply concerned. The installer I hired is coming back out, but i have had to run out in the rain every 30 mins. Is there any tips on the angles of these so that does not happen.
