Priano Hot Genoa Salami and Hot Provolone

Meats and cheeses are a hit around our house. I’m probably the biggest offender: I’m a fan of sandwiches with meats and cheeses, from a simple ham and cheese sandwich to a robust Italian sub. Other family members also have their meat-cheese preferences, including as part of an appetizer spread.

A few weeks ago, I took my daughter along with me to Aldi. We were looking around at the meats and cheeses in the store’s refrigerated section when she picked up a plastic container of a meat-cheese combination, asking if we could get it.

Just like that, I found myself writing about this package.

Priano Hot Genoa Salami and Hot Provolone is an Aldi Regular Buy, which means Aldi stocks it all the time. As mentioned, you can find it in the store’s refrigerated section. The package notes that you should keep it refrigerated, and it also has a best-before date on the back.

It is a product of Italy.

At the time of this post, the mini meat and cheese tray comes in a 2.5-ounce package and costs $2.79. That comes out to about $1.12 an ounce. It’s not clear from the package whether the 2.5 ounces is an even split between meat and cheese or if one is more than the other.

Nutritionally, the entire package constitutes a single serving. That serving comes out to 250 calories, 20 grams of fat (26% of the recommended daily allowance), 10 grams of saturated fat (50%), 60 milligrams of cholesterol (20%), and 780 milligrams of sodium (34%). The package also has 10 grams of protein.

The hot genoa salami’s key ingredients consist of pork, salt, seasoning, spices, paprika, sodium ascorbate, potassium nitrate, and sodium nitrite. The cheese is less complicated, as it’s composed of milk, salt, chili pepper, rennet, and cheese culture. As you would expect, milk is an allergen.

I’ll be honest — I wasn’t sure what to expect from these. I’m not a spicy food guy. This, though, isn’t spicy, despite what the package says. The salami has a little bit of pepper kick, but it’s otherwise mild and has a texture that chews easily. The cheese, on the other hand is mild and smooth, if flavorful.

I hoped these would pair well, and they do. The meat and cheese are a fine duo. We liked them just together with nothing else, but they also team up nicely with crackers. My daughter put them on thin wheat crackers, but you can match them with whatever you like, or just eat them alone.

Priano Hot Genoa Salami and Hot ProvoloneThe Verdict:

We really liked this mini meat and cheese tray. The meat has a bit of pepper spice — one that doesn’t linger — while the cheese is smooth and tasty. If you’re a meat-cheese fan like we are, you might have fun taking a flyer on this little package.
