Reggano Meat Pasta Sauce

Aldi sells quite a variety of tomato-based pasta sauces considering that it’s a limited-inventory grocer. The selection ranges from gourmet or organic options to budget-friendly varieties.

Here, I’m taking a closer look at one of the cheapest pasta sauces at Aldi: Reggano Meat Pasta Sauce.

This is part of a mixed case that includes Traditional, Mushroom, and Tomato, Basil & Garlic sauces. They’re all packaged in plastic containers that look like glass jars at first glance (and I wish they were actually made of glass rather than plastic). Each jar costs just $1.59 at my local Aldi.

Reggano Flavored with Meat Pasta Sauce is a Regular Buy. That means you ought to be able to find it at Aldi all year. It’s stocked among the other sauces and pastas on room-temperature shelves. Once opened, you should refrigerate the sauce.

I bought this for review and paid $1.59 for a 24-ounce jar. That’s about 7 cents per ounce.

For comparison, I found Prego meat sauce selling for $2.48 for 24 ounces at Walmart at the time of writing, which is about 10 cents per ounce. I also found Walmart-brand Great Value meat sauce for $1.67 for 24 ounces at the time of writing, or about 7 cents per ounce.

So, the Aldi sauce is cheaper than name brands. You’ll pay about the same for the Aldi sauce as you would for store brands from other retailers.

This is gluten free.

Ingredients are tomato puree (water, tomato paste), diced tomatoes in juice (diced tomatoes, tomato juice, citric acid, calcium chloride), sugar, and 2% or less beef, soybean oil, salt, garlic, onion powder, citric acid, yeast extract, beef stock, parsley flakes, and spices. It would be nice to know what “spices” are in this.

One jar has about five 1/2-cup servings. One serving has 70 calories, 1.5 grams of total fat (2% DV), no saturated fat, 440 mg of sodium (19% DV), 12 grams of total carbohydrates (4% DV), 3 grams of dietary fiber (11% DV), 8 grams of total sugars, 3 grams of added sugars (6% DV), and 2 grams of protein.

I served this with spaghetti noodles and meatballs, all from Aldi. It’s a good, standard spaghetti sauce. It has a more robust flavor compared to the Reggano Traditional Pasta Sauce we also tried from the same mixed case.

It does contain some added sugars, which is why I don’t regularly purchase this sauce. I’ll continue to stick with the Simply Nature Organic Marinara Pasta Sauce we usually eat.

This Reggano sauce isn’t bad, though. If you want spaghetti sauce on a budget, this fits the bill.

Reggano Traditional Pasta Sauce
Notice all the ridged rings around the inside of the container. It’s hard to get all the sauce out because of those.

I do have a complaint about the container (in addition to the fact that it’s made of plastic and not glass). That is the fact that the inside of the container has ridged rings that make it difficult to get all the sauce out. You have to add a bit of water, put the lid on, shake, and pour to get it all out. A jar spatula won’t do it.

The Verdict:

Reggano Flavored with Meat Pasta Sauce tastes good and is one of the cheapest pasta sauce options at Aldi. Do be aware that it contains a small amount of added sugars.

We are not fans of the containers this sauce is sold in. They’re plastic instead of glass, for one thing. Also, the interiors of the containers have raised rings that make it a chore to get all the sauce out.

  1. Walmart sauce is more watery. Add some red wine to the almost empty jar for added flavor and a way to rinse the rest of the sauce out. The alcohol will cook out in a few minutes.

  2. We have a jar of this that was donated to us and I’ve been wondering how it is given that there’s not really much meat listed in the ingredients. Thanks so much for the review – we’ll have it with meatballs!
