Nuts can be a component of a healthy diet and make for a great snack. Different types of nuts contain various vitamins and nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants. Even though they’re high in calories, nuts may help with weight loss and help you feel more full, and they may even boost your mood. They are high in fat, but it’s mostly healthy unsaturated fat. Snacking on nuts may lower cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce inflammation, and reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

My family has been looking to get away from snacks such as granola bars, which are often loaded with added sugars and carbs and possibly also processed ingredients. So, I’m stocking our pantry with more nuts. We already enjoy peanuts, pistachios, and cashews. My husband suggested getting some mixed nuts, and I found several options at Aldi.

Aldi has two choices when it comes to mixed nuts. You can buy a small, inexpensive canister of salted mixed nuts that contains peanuts, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, and pecans. Or you can buy a large, pricier, “deluxe” container of salted mixed nuts that contains almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, and macadamia nuts. Which one you prefer may depend on what types of nuts you like best. I bought both types to try, but here I’m specifically looking at Aldi’s “deluxe” mixed nuts option.

Southern Grove Deluxe Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt

Southern Grove Deluxe Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt are a Regular Buy, which means you should be able to find them any time of year at Aldi.

They cost $12.99 for a 30-ounce container at my local store at the time of writing. That comes out to about 43 cents per ounce. For comparison, the smaller container of mixed nuts at Aldi costs only $4.39 for 14.75 ounces, or about 30 cents per ounce.

Every mixed nut brand tends to contain a different variety of nuts, so it can be hard make an exact price comparison. However, if you’re not picky about exactly which nuts are in your mixed nuts, you can find cheaper options than the Aldi deluxe mixed nuts. A 34-ounce container of Planters Deluxe Salted Mixed Nuts cost about 50 cents per ounce at Walmart at the time of writing, which is more than the Aldi nuts. However, a 27-ounce container of Planters Salted Mixed Nuts cost about 37 cents per ounce at Walmart at the time of writing, which is less than the Aldi deluxe mixed nuts. You can also get Great Value mixed nuts with peanuts for about 33 cents per ounce at Walmart at the time of writing.

The Aldi deluxe mixed nuts are a product of the U.S., Vietnam, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and Kenya.

Ingredients are almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, macadamia nuts, peanut oil and/or cottonseed oil and/or sunflower oil and/or canola oil, and sea salt.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain tree nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios, macadamia nuts, and pecans). They may contain milk, soy, wheat, peanuts, other tree nuts, and sesame.

There are about 30 one-ounce servings (about 39 pieces) per container. One serving has 170 calories, 15 grams of total fat (20% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (9% DV), 80 mg of sodium (4% DV), 6 grams of total carbohydrates (2% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (8% DV), 1 gram of total sugars, no added sugars, and 5 grams of protein.

One thing you do want to be mindful of when eating salted nuts is their sodium content. With 80 mg of sodium per serving, these seem to be in the same general range as other brands of mixed nuts such as Planters or Great Value. Planters and Great Value do have lightly salted options, which look to have about half the sodium as both of the Aldi mixed nuts varieties. It would be nice if Aldi sold lightly salted nut options.

As for how these taste, they’re as expected. Almonds dominate this mix, followed by cashews. It’s light on pistachios and has a moderate amount of pecans and macadamia nuts. This mix is salted but doesn’t taste too salty. This is perfectly fine for everyday snacking or for serving to grazing party guests.

The Verdict:

Southern Grove Deluxe Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt features almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, and macadamia nuts. Almonds and cashews are the primary components of this mix. It’s salted, but not overly salty, and overall it’s a good mix. This is the pricier mixed nut option at Aldi, so if cost is a concern, you might look at other choices.
