Trader Joe’s Shea Butter and Coconut Oil Hair Mask

There are so many hair care products out there today. A lot of them seem to do the same things, so you don’t always see noticeable results. I go back and forth with a lot of different products. One set of products I like to use are Function of Beauty products, which cost more, but I think they do the job well. I also try out other things to see how they work.

Trader Joe’s has some hair care products, and I wanted to see if they were worth it.

Trader Joe’s Shea Butter and Coconut Oil Hair Mask is $3.99 for a 5.1-oz. bottle, or about 78 cents an ounce. For comparison, a Function of Beauty 7.5-oz. hair mask will set you back $19.99, or about $2.67 an ounce. Hair mask products on Amazon aren’t cheap, either. This Trader Joe’s product, then, is a pretty good deal.

I’ve never actually used a hair mask before, so I was interested to try it. It advertises that it “moisturizes and revitalizes dry, damaged hair.” This is used in place of conditioner, so a couple of nights ago, I skipped regular conditioner and used this instead.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the bottle was the coconut scent. It’s made with coconut oil, so I wasn’t surprised. It’s a pleasant scent. It isn’t too strong, and it has a relaxing feel to it. The back of the bottle says to work the formula into your hair from the roots to the ends, so that’s what I did.

The hair mask is white and resembles conditioner, both with its look and texture as well as how it works. It doesn’t lather up like shampoo, and I feel like this formula is harder to rub into my hair than my traditional conditioner. It took two generous helpings to feel like I had it in all of my hair. Granted, my hair is extremely thick, but this kind of thing doesn’t usually happen with me. This could also just be how all hair masks are, so I will look for that if I try any others in the future.

The directions then said to leave the mask in for 3 to 5 minutes. I set a timer for 5. When I rinsed it out, I thought my hair felt softer. It was as easy to rinse out as any of my other hair products. When I went to comb my hair out, it was detangled enough already that I didn’t have to use any kind of detangler spray, which I am usually forced to use.

The next day I really didn’t see any significant change in the softness of my hair, though my hair wasn’t damaged to begin with. If it were, I might have seen a more visible result. Other members of my family who tried it did feel like it made their hair softer, so it may depend on the person.

The Verdict:

In my opinion, the Trader Joe’s hair mask was a success. It worked like it was supposed to and I think if you really had damaged hair, this would be an option. The price is reasonable compared to other brands. I would recommend it. I probably won’t get it again since I don’t really need it, but it was a good thing to try.
