We didn’t eat a lot of desserts when I was a kid, but when I think back to my childhood, a few treats stand out. Boxed mix brownies baked and topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, which have always been a favorite of my mom’s. Pecan swirls. My grandmother’s strawberry Jell-O mixed with Cool Whip and real strawberries.
Another childhood favorite was ice cream sandwiches. Sometimes my mom might pick up a box at the store as a summer indulgence. Or, if I had some spare change, I could buy an ice cream sandwich at school during lunch time. That combination of vanilla ice cream and soft fudgy wafer was sublime.
Aldi has sold traditional ice cream sandwiches for as long as I can remember under the store’s Sundae Shoppe private label, and they’re fine.
During my routine weekly Aldi run the other week, I discovered some new jumbo-sized ice cream sandwiches. These look a lot like name-brand FatBoy ice cream sandwiches. They’re square-shaped instead of rectangular, and they are thicker, with more ice cream sandwiched between the wafers.
The Aldi sandwiches come in two flavors: original Vanilla and Cookies & Cream.
We found Sundae Shoppe Jumbo Premium Ice Cream Sandwiches in the Regular Buy freezer section at Aldi. Products in the Regular Buy freezer are typically sold all the time, all year. However, these jumbo ice cream sandwiches are not currently listed on Aldi’s website as an everyday Regular Buy. We also checked the listing of current summer-only Seasonal Items on Aldi’s website and can’t find these there either. We found some comments about these on Aldi-focused social media groups dating back to early July of 2024, so they have been around for at least a month. Whether they will stick around beyond the summer months, we aren’t sure.
Sundae Shoppe Jumbo Premium Ice Cream Sandwiches cost $3.99 at the time of publication for a 30-ounce box that contains six 5-ounce ice cream sandwiches. That comes out to about 13 cents per ounce, or about 67 cents per sandwich.
For comparison, a 60-ounce box of twelve 5-ounce FatBoy ice cream sandwiches cost $8.47 at Walmart at the time of publication. That’s about 14 cents per ounce, or about 71 cents per sandwich.
If you’re looking out for allergens, both flavors contain milk, wheat, and soy. They may contain peanuts, egg, and tree nuts.
