Fresh Grill Sweet Chili Lime Chicken Breast Skewers at Aldi

Summer is grilling season, and Aldi knows it. And what is more fun to grill than meat and veggies on a stick? This is a time of year when Aldi is more like to stock products such as chicken kabobs and shrimp skewers.

This summer, I noticed what appears to be a new summer-only Seasonal Item in the fresh meat section at Aldi: chicken breast skewers with a sweet chili lime marinade. I bought these, cooked them at home, and offered them to the ultimate taste-testing crew: my family. They had opinions. (More on that shortly.)

Fresh Grill Chicken Breast Skewers cost $7.49 for a 1.41-pound package at my store at the time of publication. That comes out to about $5.31 per pound.

As mentioned above, these are a Seasonal Item. They’re at Aldi for the summer months only, and Aldi does not offer online ordering if these are out of stock at your local store. Given that this post was published in the late summer, I don’t anticipate that Aldi will stock these for much longer. However, I’d guess that Aldi will bring them back again next summer.

These are sold uncooked and seasoned. The package I bought had a use-by date or more than a week out from when I purchased them, so you have a little time to use these. I think they would freeze fine if you wanted to save them to cook later.

They’re a product of Canada. The package states these were manufactured by Concord Premium Meats based in Concord, Ontario.

These contain up to a 13.25% added solution of seasoning, water, salt, flavorings, vinegar, and canola oil colored with turmeric.

Ingredients include chicken breast, seasoning (sugar, lime juice powder [corn syrup solids, lime juice, flavor], spices, and coloring, dehydrated garlic, corn syrup solids, dehydrated green bell pepper, dehydrated onion, tomato powder, red bell pepper powder, canola oil, flavor), water, salt, flavorings, vinegar, and canola oil.

I’m not a fan of the corn syrup solids or vague-sounding “spices” and “flavorings” in the ingredients list, but these contain fewer processed ingredients than some other meals I’ve seen in the grocery store.

One skewer is considered one serving. One skewer has 100 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat (3% DV), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (3% DV), 360 mg of sodium (16% DV), 3 grams of total carbohydrates (1% DV), no dietary fiber, 2 grams of total sugars, 2 grams of added sugars (4% DV), and 16 grams of protein.

The package has directions for cooking these on the grill, in a frying pan, or in a conventional oven. No matter how you cook these, you should cook them to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees.

To grill, brush the grill with vegetable oil and preheat the grill to medium. Remove skewer from the packaging and place on the grill. Grill for 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally.

To fry in a pan, remove skewers from the package and place them in a nonstick frying pan. Cook over medium heat for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally.

To bake, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Remove the skewers from the packaging and place them on a foil- or parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 16-18 minutes, turning once.

Our chicken skewers after we baked them. They browned nicely even though we didn’t grill them.

I baked these in my conventional oven. They were done after only 14 minutes, which is a little less than the 16-18 minutes the directions indicate, so you’ll want to keep an eye on these and use a thermometer to check them.

These came out tender, juicy, and very flavorful. They are highly seasoned, but not overly seasoned. They are mildly spicy, with a bit of a sweet citrusy flavor. and everyone in my family liked them. These go well with a fresh salad and some rice, or you can serve them as part of a mixed grill alongside steak and seafood. They’re a good easy meal to keep stocked in your deep freezer.

The Verdict:

Fresh Grill Chicken Breast Skewers come with a sweet chili lime marinade and can be grilled, baked, or pan fried. They’re nicely seasoned and cook up moist and tender. Consider us fans. The only downside is that Aldi only stocks these during the summer months.

  1. We found these to be very salty in their first four pack version, which was more expensive/each besides.

    1. I wonder if they tweaked the recipe. We didn’t think they were too salty at all. Definitely worth trying again.
