Bake Shop Pumpkin Cake Roll

EDITOR’S NOTE: Read our updated post on the new Aldi pumpkin cake roll with buttercream filling here.

Also note, this product originally was sold under a different Aldi label as the Specially Selected Pumpkin Cake Roll. This post was updated in September 2020 to reflect the change.

It’s fall, and whether you like it or not, that means it’s time for pumpkin everything! Aldi rolls out an array of Special Buy seasonal foods every autumn, including pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin spice bagels, pumpkin spice bread, apple bread, pumpkin pie, and a variety of caramel apples. The store even sometimes sells pumpkin-spice-scented dish soap (which I may or may not hoard) and pumpkin- and cider-scented candles.

Among Aldi’s cornucopia of fall products, one item that gets rave reviews in my family is Aldi’s Bake Shop Pumpkin Cake Roll.

This pumpkin cake roll cost $3.99 for a 22-oz. roll at the time this post was last updated.

The cake roll is sometimes found in the freezer section and sometimes in the refrigerated cooler section at Aldi, but the package states the cake is to be stored in your refrigerator when you get it home.

It’s a Seasonal Favorite, which means it’s in stores longer than an ALDI Find (Special Buy). I usually see it through the fall months at my local Aldi, and then it disappears until the next year.

This treat is advertised as a “rolled pumpkin cake with cream cheese filling.”

The first few ingredients are sugar, cream cheese, and wheat flour.

If you’re avoiding allergens, this contains egg, milk, soy, and wheat.

With 280 calories and 25 grams of added sugar in one serving, this pumpkin cake roll might kill your diet. It also has 12 grams of total fat (15% DV) and 5 grams of saturated fat (25% DV).

One pumpkin cake roll will yield eight servings.

On a more health-conscious note, the cake gets its dark color from beta carotene, which is in keeping with Aldi’s commitment to keep artificial dyes out of its store brand products.

Even if you are not a big fan of pumpkin-flavored foods, this cake has a mild flavor, and the cream cheese filling is refreshing and helps to balance the pumpkin taste. It also looks lovely when you cut it into slices that show the cream cheese swirls in the cake.

Overall, this is a great dessert for a fall evening. Pair it with a glass of Aldi’s seasonal apple cider, and you’re all set.

The Verdict:

The Bake Shop Pumpkin Roll Cake is loaded with calories and sugar, which might explain why it is so delicious. Even if you don’t go for the pumpkin-spice-everything trend, this is really good, with a mild pumpkin flavor that works well with the cream cheese filling. Highly recommended.

  1. This Pumpkin Roll is the bomb!!! The sponge is so light and perfect texture. The Pumpkin flavor and spices are perfection. The cream is delicious. I hope they don’t change it. My local grocer that has a great bakery (GIANT) makes one and it costs a few $ more and tastes pathetic next to Aldi’s pumpkin roll.

    1. The pumkin cake roll is great. Its not worth baking. Id like to see more cranberry goodies during this season. Yorkville,ny gal

    2. The pumpkin cake roll is the best thing I’ve ever found, I think I bought about 10 this year gave a couple to my neighbor he may be about sixLOL, However they need to keep this the whole holiday season round.

  2. I got this item from a church’s food pantry. I do not see a ‘best buy’ date. The numbers on this Pumpkin Cake Roll item are 3292011/3293011. Is this the sell by or best by date? If not what is the appropriate date by which it is safe to consume. I am a grandmother with three grandchildren. I really need to know whether this is safe to serve to them. Thanks

  3. Sadly, the 2022 pumpkin rolls are four ounces smaller with “buttercream icing” instead of cream cheese filling and a cake that is much lighter, meaning more air. And, the price is 50 cents higher as it was last year than in 2020. In size alone, that results in a price over 20% higher. I won’t be buying this anymore. Sad that Aldi has fallen to the level of so many corporations that reduce quantity and quality of products and hope that customers don’t notice. When we do notice, it reflects VERY poorly on these companies.

    1. I totally agree, the buttercream pumpkin roll is very disappointing! I used to make pumpkin rolls every year until I found the cream cheese pumpkin roll at Aldi’s. Guess I will go back to making my own, so sad but my kids will be happy!
