Fusia Asian Inspirations Sweet & Sour Chicken
When it comes to takeout-style food, Aldi offers a decent selection ranging from General Tso’s chicken to egg rolls to potstickers. I often keep a stash of these products in my deep freezer for evenings when I need to heat up a quick and easy dinner. It’s always a hit with my family.
One thing that is missing from the Regular Buy Aldi takeout lineup, though, is sweet & sour chicken. This is a favorite dish for some of my family members, and it’s what they often order when we get takeout from a local restaurant. To the best of my knowledge, Aldi sells only a sweet & sour jarred sauce that you can add to chicken, but they don’t regularly stock any frozen, ready-to-heat sweet & sour chicken.
This week, though, Aldi is selling frozen sweet & sour chicken as a limited-time special. Of course I picked up a bag for my family to try. We put it to the test to see how it compares to what we get from our favorite restaurant.
Fusia Asian Inspirations Sweet & Sour Chicken is an Aldi Find, so it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone unless Aldi decides to bring it back later. Aldi does not offer online ordering if this is sold out at your local store.
This cost $7.49 for a 24-ounce package at the time of publication. That comes out to about 31 cents per ounce.
If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains wheat, eggs, and soy.
One package has about four 1-cup servings. The servings are not large with these types of dinner kits from Aldi, so I always serve them with sides such as egg rolls, potstickers, lo mein, or fried rice.
This has plenty of fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars, so it’s not something to eat all the time. One serving has 330 calories, 17 grams of total fat (22% DV), 2.5 grams of saturated fat (13% DV), 570 mg of sodium (25% DV), 34 grams of total carbohydrates (12% DV), no dietary fiber, 19 grams of total sugars, 18 grams of added sugars (35% DV), and 12 grams of protein.
The back of the bag has directions for baking this in a conventional oven. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove the sauce pouch and place it unopened in a bowl of hot water to thaw. Evenly lay chicken on a baking sheet and place it into the preheated oven. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the internal temperature of the largest piece of chicken is 165 degrees when pierced with an instant-read food thermometer. Toss sauce with chicken or drizzle it over the top if desired.
This is like other Asian-inspired chicken entrees at Aldi: it consists of breaded chicken bites with a sauce pouch that you stir in after the chicken has baked. I generally bake the chicken on the longer side of the advised baking time to crisp it up more. You could also air fry the chicken, although I haven’t tried that yet.
I served this with some rainbow cauliflower, some Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice, and some Aldi kimchi potstickers. This tastes as expected, similar to sweet & sour chicken from a restaurant. Is it restaurant quality? Not quite. But it’s good. This got a thumbs up from my family, and it didn’t last long on the dinner table.
The Verdict:
Fusia Asian Inspirations Sweet & Sour Chicken is a frozen limited-buy dinner option at Aldi. It features breaded chicken that bakes up crisp, and then you drizzle it with the included sauce pouch. If you’re craving takeout but are on a budget, this is a good choice.
