Park Street Deli Chickpea Salad

I’ve been trying to get away from a lot of the foods in the grocery store that contain high amounts of fat, sugar, or sodium. It’s a bit of an ongoing New Year’s resolution. Instead of ultra-processed meals, I’ve been stocking the kitchen with a variety of whole foods, including lean protein, whole grains, fresh fruit, nuts, and cheese. Also, salad is a regular component during lunch and dinner.

While most people often think of salad as lettuce and other greens, you can also enjoy salads made with a variety of beans and other veggies. In fact, Aldi sells several of these types of ready-to-eat salads. They offer an excellent parsley-based taboule salad, a black bean salad, and a chickpea salad all in the refrigerated deli aisle near the dips, cheese, and lunch meat.

Here, I’m taking a closer look at the chickpea salad Aldi sells. The label describes this as “chickpeas & edamame beans with a mix of cranberries, carrots & bell pepper.”

At the time of writing, Park Street Deli Chickpea Salad is a Regular Buy. That means you should be able to find it at Aldi all year.

This cost $2.99 for an 8-ounce container at my local store at the time of publication. One container has 2.5 half-cup servings. That comes out to about $1.20 per serving or about 37 cents per ounce.

Aldi sells this under the Park Street Deli brand. There is not a company called Park Street Deli. Rather, that’s the private label Aldi puts on deli products it sources from a variety of suppliers.

If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains soy.

This has a small amount of preservatives, but the ingredients list otherwise looks wholesome. The full ingredients list is chickpeas, edamame beans (soy), cranberries, sunflower oil, olive oil, carrots, red peppers, green peppers, salt, Italian seasoning (oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme, rosemary), citric acid, garlic, black pepper, cumin, white vinegar, and 1/10th of 1% of sodium benozoate and potassium (to preserve freshness).

One 1/2-cup serving has 140 calories, 7 grams of total fat (9% DV), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (3% DV), 250 mg of sodium (11% DV), 17 grams of total carbohydrates (6% DV), 3 grams of dietary fiber (12% DV), 7 grams of total sugars, no added sugars, and 5 grams of protein. This also has 4% of your daily value of calcium, 10% of your daily value of iron, and 6% of your daily value of potassium.

I think this salad is excellent. It has a good blend of flavors that works well. The chickpeas and cranberries are soft, while the edamame beans add some firmer texture. This works well as a side dish to a meal, or it tastes good enough that you could make a lunch meal of it just on its own. Chickpeas aren’t always my favorite, but this is so good that I’ll be buying this again.

The Verdict:

Park Street Deli Chickpea Salad features chickpeas, edamame beans, cranberries, carrots, bell peppers, and Italian seasoning. It’s a great mix of flavors and tastes delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by how good this is, and it’s pretty good for you, too.
