Pur Aqua Sparkling Frost

Sparkling flavored water is having a moment. While soda has dominated drink sales for years, as more people try to make healthier choices, flavored water sales have risen, and sparkling water sales have soared. There are different kinds of sparkling water, all with very different tastes. There’s plain or unflavored, which is great for making mixed drinks, and then there’s flavored sparkling water.

Aldi sells its own take on flavored sparkling water.

PurAqua Sparkling Frost cost $0.49 for a 17-oz. bottle at the time of publication. These are Regular Buys, which means they’re on the shelves at Aldi stores year round.

This sparkling water comes in six flavors: black raspberry, cherry limeade, pink grapefruit, peach nectarine, orange mango, and classic lemonade.

They all contain zero calories and have no sugar. They are sweetened with sucralose, a common artificial sweetener also found in the Pur Aqua Frut Flavored Water line that Aldi sells. Frost drinks contain less than 1% juice.

For the most part, my husband and I avoid diet sweeteners or artificial sweeteners, partly because we don’t usually care for the taste and also because research indicates artificial sweeteners can increase cravings for sugar. My kids like these Frost drinks, though, so we sometimes get them as a treat. I also admit to liking the taste of these more than a lot of other artificially sweetened drinks. I think their fizzy factor helps to make them more appealing.

Another reason why I only buy these occasionally as a treat is because their ingredients are a lengthy laundry list of unfamiliar items, including preservatives and lab-produced natural flavors, which I generally try to limit consumption of.

The bottle labels recommend chilling these before drinking, and leftover sparkling water should be refrigerated after opening to maintain freshness.

Here’s a closer look at the different flavors:

PurAqua Black Raspberry Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

This has a good fruity flavor with plenty of fizz. My family approved.

Ingredients are carbonated water, natural flavor, malic acid, vegetable juice (for color), potassium sorbate and potassium benzoate (preservatives), blackberry juice concentrate, sucralose, green tea, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin A acetate, biotin, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12).

This has 35 mg of sodium (2% DV). The nutrition label also states it contains 50 mg of green tea extract and 12.5 mg of flavonoids.

It has 20% of your daily value of vitamin D, niacin, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and biotin.

PurAqua Cherry Limeade Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

This is one of my family’s favorite flavors among the Frost drinks. It has a nice balance between the cherry and lime flavors. If you don’t care for the taste of artificial sweeteners, the lime flavor in this sort of helps to disguise the sucralose aftertaste.

Ingredients are carbonated water, natural flavor, citric acid, lime juice concentrate, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), vegetable juice (for color), sucralose, green tea, gum acacia, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), beta carotene (for color), ester gum, niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), biotin, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and cyanobalamin (vitamin B12).

It has 20% of your daily value of vitamin D, niacin, vitamin B6, biotin, and pantothenic acid.

PurAqua Pink Grapefruit Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

This is predictably sour with sweet notes, and it tasted a lot like my morning grapefruit sprinkled with just a bit of sugar. If you like grapefruit juice, this tastes similar but with bubbles.

Ingredients are carbonated water, natural flavor, citric acid, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), grapefruit juice concentrate, gum acacia, sucralose, green tea, ester gum, vegetable juice (for color), beta carotene (for color), calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin A acetate, biotin, and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).

It has 20% of your daily value of vitamin D, niacin, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin B6, biotin, and pantothenic acid.

PurAqua Peach Nectarine Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

This flavor was another family favorite. My kids described its taste as similar to the mango passion fruit juice we sometimes buy from Aldi.

Ingredients are carbonated water, malic acid, natural flavor, peach juice concentrate, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), gum acacia, beta carotene (for color), ester gum, sucralose, green tea, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), biotin, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and cyanobalamin (vitamin B12).

PurAqua Orange Mango Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

This is not far off from the peach nectarine Frost flavor in terms of taste (and color), but with a more sour tang to it. Good for fans of orange juice.

Ingredients are carbonated water, citric acid, natural flavor, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), orange juice concentrate, gum acacia, sucralose, ester gum, green tea, beta carotene (for color), vegetable juice (for color), calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin A acetate, biotin, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and cyanobalamin (vitamin B12).

PurAqua Classic Lemonade Sparkling Frost

Pur Aqua Frost

My family thought this flavor ranged from “okay” to “a little off” to “not bad.” We thought it had a slightly stronger diet flavor compared to some of the other Frost flavors. One family member said that with the carbonation it tastes a little like Sprite. Whether you like it may depend on your personal preferences.

Ingredients are carbonated water, citric acid, natural flavor, lemon juice concentrate, potassium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), gum acacia, sucralose, green tea, ester gum, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), niacinamide (niacin), D-calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), beta carotene (for color), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), biotin, cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), and cyanobalamin (vitamin B12).

It has 20% of your daily value of vitamin D, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, biotin, and pantothenic acid.

The Verdict:

PurAqua Sparkling Frost is flavored sparkling water that comes in black raspberry, cherry limeade, pink grapefruit, peach nectarine, orange mango, and classic lemonade flavors. Some of our personal favorites include cherry limeade and peach nectarine, but all of the flavors are pretty good. They are all sugar free and sweetened with sucralose, so if you aren’t into artificial or diet sweeteners, these aren’t for you.

  1. I love the sparkling Friday drinks but would like to know where they are made

    • You’d have to ask Aldi about that.

      • Do I have to to ask ALDI why they changed the formula?
The color, flavor, and calorie count has changed to the point that I don’t enjoy them any more.

        • I really enjoy this product. Lemon is my favorite. I’m practically drinking one right now. I’ve been very curious lately to know if there are any health risks from consuming these over time. Thanks for your review! I know better now.

  9. My wife used to love the Pink Grapefruit. I’d buy 15 of them every 2 weeks for her. Recently I bought some while away on vacation in Florida and she said they were OK but not the same. Back home from vacation, I just bought 15 yesterday and she tried 2 of them and said she can’t drink them. They tasted nasty. The pink tint was also much darker than usual. I noticed when I bought them, there were only 2 cases on the shelf (15 of the 19 bottles were Pink Grapefruit). Usually there are around 12-15 cases of mixed varieties.
