Specially Selected Shrimp & Lobster Bake

At least once a year, if not more often, Aldi sells a pair of frozen seafood pasta dishes. I like seafood and I like pasta, so I often pick these up when they’re available. One of these dishes is a lobster mac & cheese, while the other is a shrimp & lobster bake.

Let’s take a closer look at the shrimp & lobster bake.

Specially Selected Shrimp & Lobster Bake is an Aldi Find. That means it’s in stores for just a limited time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone until whenever Aldi brings it back. Fortunately, this tends to come around at least once a year. You can’t order this online from Aldi if it’s out of stock at your local store.

This cost $7.49 for an 18-ounce package in 2025. That’s about 42 cents per ounce. With two servings per box, that’s around $3.75 per serving. We bought this with our own funds.

The package describes this as “premium shrimp and lobster blended with tomato, ricotta, fontina, and mozzarella cheeses layered between sheets of pasta.”

This is sold under the Specially Selected Aldi private label. There is no company called Specially Selected that makes this. Rather, Specially Selected is the name Aldi puts on many of its gourmet products to give the packaging a uniform look. Those products are actually sourced from a variety of different suppliers.

If you’re looking out for allergens, this contains milk, shellfish (lobster, shrimp), and wheat.

The ingredients list includes various cheeses, tomatoes, lobster, shrimp, basil, salt, granulated garlic and onion, black pepper, milk, cream, lobster extract, and pasta. It also includes some processed ingredients such as guar gum, carrageenan, and xanthan gum.

One serving (half the package) has 340 calories, 14 grams of total fat (18% DV), 7 grams of saturated fat (35% DV), 610 mg of sodium (27% DV), 32 grams of total carbohydrates (12% DV), 1 gram of dietary fiber (4% DV), 2 grams of total sugars, no added sugars, and 20 grams of protein.

The package has directions for baking this in the oven (preferred) or microwaving it.

To bake from frozen, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove the tray from the package and peel off the plastic film cover. Place the tray on a baking sheet and bake on the center rack in the oven for 40 minutes, or until heated to 165 degrees. Remove from the oven and let stand for 2 minutes before serving.

To microwave from frozen, remove the tray from the cardboard sleeve. Pierce the film 3 to 4 times. Place in a the microwave on the center of the turntable. Cook on high heat for 8-9 minutes, until cooked through and hot. Let stand for 1 minute before serving.

Unlike the lobster mac & cheese, which is a macaroni style dish, the shrimp & lobster bake is more like a seafood lasagna. The sauce is a combination of tomato and cheese, and there are bits of shrimp and lobster scattered about the bake. The seafood pieces are very small and not as noticeable as you might hope, but the seafood flavor is there.

The two-serving amount isn’t huge, but it’s good for two people, especially if you throw a veggie side or two into the mix for good measure.

This isn’t as good as the seafood lasagna recipe we like to make, but this is pretty good anyway, and it’s a lot faster, even in the oven, than cooking up a recipe from scratch.

The Verdict:

Specially Selected Shrimp & Lobster Bake is a seafood lasagna that features tiny pieces of shrimp and lobster mixed with a creamy sauce and layered between pasta sheets. It’s not as good as homemade, but we feel like it’s good for a frozen grocery store entree.
