Sukhi’s Chicken Coconut Curry
Figuring out what to make for dinner that will make everyone happy is not always an easy task. Some people in my family prefer meat and potatoes. Others are fond of vegetarian dishes. Still others would be perfectly fine eating comfort foods such as chicken nuggets or macaroni and cheese.
During the past year or so, there is one particular type of cuisine that everyone in my family has decided they like, and that is Indian food. My husband and I have loved Indian dishes for years, and it’s always a treat when we go out to Indian restaurants, but now all of the kids are on board as well.
If I want to make a dinner that everyone will like, I can dice up and cook some chicken breasts in a skillet and simmer them with a jar of tikka masala sauce or butter chicken sauce from Aldi. For a complete meal, I make some basmati rice on the stovetop, heat a few pieces of naan in the oven, and toss some frozen samosas in the air fryer.
Aldi sold a selection of Indian-inspired foods recently, including frozen butter chicken with rice, mini naanpanadas, and samosas.
I also recently picked up some fully cooked, ready-to-heat Indian entrees from the Aldi Find refrigerator aisle last week. They came in two varieties: chicken tikka masala and chicken coconut curry. I bought both. Because they’re fairly small, I served them together for dinner with some other sides to make a full meal.
You can read my full review of the chicken tikka masala here. The post below focuses on the chicken coconut curry.
Sukhi’s Chicken Coconut Curry cost $9.79 for a 15-ounce package at my local store at the time of publication. That’s about 65 cents per ounce. The package has three 5-ounce servings, which comes out to about $3.26 per serving.
Sukhi’s is not an Aldi house brand, and Sukhi’s products are not exclusive to Aldi. Sukhi’s was founded by Sukhi Singh, who was born in India. She was inspired by her grandmother’s cooking, and when she moved to the U.S. in 1985, she began selling some of her products at farmers markets in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sukhi’s products are now sold at Costco, Safeway, Whole Foods, Albertsons, and other grocers.
The Sukhi’s product line includes frozen “naanwiches,” frozen samosas, and complete frozen meals that include rice, naan, and curry. The company also makes refrigerated entrees that are ready to heat and serve, like the ones I bought at Aldi.
Both the Sukhi’s Chicken Coconut Curry and Sukhi’s Chicken Tikka Masala are Aldi Finds, which means Aldi gets a single shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone. Aldi seems to sell these a couple of times a year, so if you like them, you may want to follow the weekly Aldi ad.
You might be able to find this product or other Sukhi’s products at other grocery stores, as well. I found the chicken tikka masala at Kroger, selling for 30 cents less than at Aldi.
This chicken coconut curry has no preservatives and is gluten free. It’s certified halal by Islamic Services of America. This is a product of the United States.
If you’re watching out for allergens, this contains tree nuts (coconut).
The full ingredients list contains white chicken, coconut curry sauce (coconut milk [coconut extract, water], mango chutney [sugar, salt, ginger, garlic, chili powder, acetic acid], tomato paste, ginger, garlic, and 2% or less of curry paste [garlic, lemongrass, spices, salt, shallot, kaffir lime peel, turmeric], mustard seeds, salt, xanthan gum, paprika, tamarind, spices, turmeric, garlic powder, jalapeno, citric acid [for flavor], oleoresin asafoetida, oleoresin cardamom), water, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
One 5-ounce serving has 180 calories, 6 grams of total fat (9% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% DV), 600 mg of sodium (25% DV), 11 grams of total carbohydrates (4% DV), no dietary fiber, 6 grams of sugars, and 22 grams of protein.
This is sold fully cooked, so all you need to do is heat it up. The package has instructions for heating it in a microwave or on the stovetop. It comes with a handy plastic tray that is microwavable for convenience.
To microwave, remove the paper sleeve and empty the bag into the included plastic tray. Cover and heat on high for 2 minutes. Stir, cover, and heat for 1 additional minute or until hot. Stir again. Let stand for 1 minute and serve.
To heat on the stove, remove the paper sleeve and empty the plastic pouch into a medium-sized saucepan. Cover and heat on medium heat for 5-7 minutes or until hot. Empty the contents into a serving bowl and serve.
This meal is an interesting change from the tikka masala or butter chicken dishes that I most often see at grocery stores. It’s creamy, with lightly sweet coconut notes, and the mustard seeds add unique texture. The chicken is tender, and there is plenty of it. It’s also not really spicy, and the package notes it is mild.
If there is any downside to this, it might be that it’s not the cheapest Indian food at Aldi — you can buy a jar of simmer sauce and a pack of chicken breasts and get a better deal — but it is really good.
It’s on the small side if you’re feeding more than a couple of people. That’s why I served this alongside the Sukhi’s Chicken Tikka Masala, and that way everyone could enjoy sampling more than one dish. The package recommends serving this with Sukhi’s Lemon Rice, but I just served it with Aldi basmati rice and naan, along with some Trader Joe’s samosas. All together, it made for a tasty, easy meal.
The Verdict:
Sukhi’s Chicken Coconut Curry features white meat chicken in a creamy spiced coconut sauce. It’s sweet, savory, and not too spicy. This brand is not exclusive to Aldi, so you might find it at other grocery stores near you. It’s worth picking up any time you spot it at Aldi.
