Journey to India Mini Samosas

For a while now, Aldi has been a good store to purchase ingredients for Indian-inspired meals. During Aldi Reviewer’s early days, Aldi sold some fantastic jarred tikka masala sauce. It was the closest to restaurant quality I had found in any grocery store. It was flavorful, with just the right spice level, and it paired perfectly with cooked chicken served with basmati rice and naan. Then, unfortunately, Aldi changed suppliers and the original tikka masala sauce disappeared. Aldi has gone through several different variations of tikka masala sauce, and the one they currently stock is decent, if not the same as the original.

I still buy plenty of foods for Indian-inspired meals at Aldi. They still sell basmati rice and naan year round as Regular Buys. Aldi also sells a few types of Regular Buy jarred sauces in addition to tikka masala, including butter chicken sauce and korma sauce.

Also, Aldi sometimes sells mini samosas. Samosas are often on the appetizer menu at Indian restaurants. This South Asian food features a flaky pastry in a triangle or cone shape that is usually stuffed with potatoes and other veggies and spices. Whenever I see samosas in stock at Aldi, I always buy a few boxes to stash in my deep freezer. My family likes these samosas, and we think they’re more flavorful than the samosas that Trader Joe’s — which is a cousin to Aldi — sells.

Journey to India Mini Samosas

Journey to India Mini Samosas cost $4.49 for a 10.2-ounce package at the time of publication. Each package typically contains 12 pieces, which comes out to about 37 cents per piece. These are a product of Canada.

These are an Aldi Find, so they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone until next time. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that are not in stock at your local store.

The packages have directions for baking these in a conventional oven. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove packaging and place the samosas on a baking sheet. Bake for 18-20 minutes on the middle rack, flipping samosas halfway through baking. Remove carefully from the oven and let stand 2 minutes before serving. Place the unopened sauce packet in a cup of hot water for 2-3 minutes to thaw.

I always cook these in my Aldi air fryer. They cook in the air fryer at 400 degrees for about 9 minutes, and I shake the fryer basket to flip the samosas about halfway through the cooking time. They come out nice and crispy.

Each box contains three 4-piece servings.

Journey to India Mini Vegetable Samosas:

My family prefers these veggie samosas over the chicken tikka samosas. These have a medium spice level and plenty of potatoes, peas, and carrots in the filling along with various spices.

I like that these samosa ingredients are all mostly straightforward and easily recognizable, other than some xanthan gum in the included tamarind dipping sauce packet. My family doesn’t usually eat the sauce that comes with these, although it does help to tone down the spice level. Ingredients for the filling are potatoes, carrots, peas, lentils, onions, canola oil, cilantro, salt, spices (it would be good if Aldi specified what spices), garlic, citric acid, and turmeric. The pastry crust is made with water, enriched wheat flour, canola oil, salt, and vinegar.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain wheat.

Journey to India Mini Chicken Tikka Samosas:

I really like these and will happily eat either these or the veggie samosas, while my family all prefer the veggie samosas. These chicken tikka samosas feature a savory shredded chicken filling in a tomato-yogurt sauce. These have a medium spice level, but I don’t think they’re quite as spicy as the veggie samosas.

Again, the ingredients are mostly simple and straightforward. Ingredients for the filling are chicken, onion, potatoes, water, crushed tomatoes, yogurt, garlic, canola oil, salt, paprika, ginger, spices (once again, it would be nice if Aldi said what spices), cilantro, fenugreek, citric acid, turmeric, and sugar. The pastry crust is made with water, enriched wheat flour, canola oil, salt, and vinegar.

If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain wheat and milk.

A four-piece serving with 1 tablespoon of sauce has 200 calories, 10 grams of total fat (13% DV), 1 gram of saturated fat (5% DV), 455 mg of sodium (20% DV), 19 grams of total carbohydrates (7% DV), 4 grams of total sugars, and 2 grams of added sugars (4% DV).

The Verdict:

Journey to India Mini Samosas come in vegetable or chicken tikka flavors, and we like them both, although some of our taste testers prefer the vegetable version. These come out crispy and flaky when you air fry them, and they have a medium spice level. If you enjoy Indian food, stock up on these whenever you see them in stock at Aldi.

  1. Hi! I couldn’t help but leave a comment. The spices that are added taste like curry powder. I think that’s the most likely, as it’s a popular blend of spices for Indian food.
